Job description

This Summer Student position will assist the Community Development Department’s Planning Division in a broad range of environmental, land-use, and broader community development projects and processes to support the Municipality’s Strategic Plan. The position will also support the Municipality’s land-use planning functions, services, and activities, including staff work for the Heritage Port Hope Advisory Committee, Committee of Adjustment, and other relevant municipal committees.

Compensation and Work Term

$17.47 to $18.96 per hour
May to August, 35 hours per week

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or completed Community College in Law & Security, Police Foundation, Criminology, or related field.
  • Basic knowledge of the Ontario Court of Justice, the Provincial Offences Act, The Municipal Act, Ontario Evidence Act, and other related Provincial and Federal Legislation would be an asset.
  • Verbal communication skills including courtesy, tact and explanation.
  • Valid and satisfactory G or G2 Ontario drivers licence is an asset.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • Varied work environment with requirements to work outside in inclement weather and work in an office environment with significant interruptions.

Responsibilities

  • Some post-secondary education in urban, rural, and/or general land-use planning, Geography, Architecture, Business, Public Administration or related disciplines with an interest and awareness of community development and heritage conservation.
  • Intermediate computer skills and experience with GIS software, strong verbal and written communications skills, customer service skills, and working in a team environment are important assets.
  • Adhere to high standards of ethical behavior and demonstrate their understanding that their personal actions impact the public’s perception of the Municipality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Building Official or designate
