Job Description:

Assist the unit in the management, interpretation, modelling and presentation of asset information in power system databases and simulation tools. Identify and propose processes and standards to ensure data integrity. Develop, implement, enhance and support system applications to facilitate extraction of data from, or migration of data to power system databases (PSDB), or management of data within PSDB. Respond to data requests for queries/extracts of PSDB data. Assist in meeting market obligations for data requirements for Equipment Registry. Support information requirements for Customer Connections. Support information requirements for tariff pools.
-Assist in assessments and other specialized technical studies to determine transmission/distribution customer/system/information needs. Develop strategies, alternatives and preferred solutions. Assist in delivery of solution through suppliers and service providers. Receive assignments from supervisor in broad terms on specific problems related to assigned area of work. Research available resources and contacts and propose effective recommendations to improve performance. Prepare comprehensive reports and specifications and present solutions, producing necessary documentation, as necessary.
-Assist the unit on discussions with customers, stakeholders and suppliers. Act as a technical resource and consultant on transmission/distribution asset management matters. Liaise with other internal work groups, divisions and outside interests. Provide technical guidance to others as required. Assist in resolution of work problems and train new staff in job responsibilities.
-Assist as required in providing coding in the appropriate databases such as Microsoft, Access for the maintenance of applications, utilizing the appropriate computerized asset information systems.
-Perform analyses of the power system under normal and/or abnormal situations using appropriate digital computer programs, including various load flow programs, stability programs, electromagnetic transient programs, short circuit programs, distribution factor programs and reliability programs, as assigned. Establish the base case situation, the extent of the system representation, the system configuration and the generation and load levels desired, consulting with the requester only for clarification of intent of the analysis. Obtain from various sources, all pertinent line, transformer, generation and load data necessary to carry out the study. Plot, tabulate or otherwise summarize the results, using plotting or summarizing programs where available and submit to the person requesting the analysis, with a copy to the Supervisor.
-Maintain divisional technical data files and databases. Obtain the necessary information on components of the electric power system, such as transmission lines, transformers, circuit breakers, generation, load and protective and control equipment, required for the work of the Division from within the department and from other departments and divisions. Check the information for reasonableness. Prepare and check the necessary data for entering data into data files. Check the updated files to ensure all additions and changes are properly entered and processed. Matters requiring interpretation of departmental practices are referred to Supervisor for resolution.
-Develop or revise, on own initiative and as conditions demand, documents and computer programs used for the evaluation of the power system, the analysis and display of study results, as well as the processing of data.
-Carry out studies related to system planning or system analysis. Receive requests from engineering personnel to perform calculations. Refer to files and records to obtain pertinent data and calculate required information. Submit results to the requester.
-Reply directly to requests from other departments and divisions for information with respect to computer study results and the Division's computer programs and data files and databases. Attend meetings on these subjects as a subject matter expert, representing the Department and/or Division.
-Represent the Company on various task forces and working groups as an Ontario transmission owner and operator. Contact and work with the Independent Market Operator and counterpart members of industry reliability organizations (eg: the Northeast Power Coordinating Council task force working groups) to discuss modelling assumptions, exchange study results and exercise influence to reach consensus on work activities. Coordinate work of other groups within the Company to reach consensus on data requirements for customers. Contact market participants (eg; OPGI, customers with regard to review of customer facility registrations).
-Maintain an awareness of advancing technology developments in transmission/distribution/information facilities and systems.
-Periodically assign and check work of other personnel of the group as assigned by the Supervisor.

Selection Criteria:
Education :

-Requires a knowledge of advance mathematics and engineering principles to carry out studies concerning power system planning and analysis.
-Requires a knowledge of system modelling tools and data.
-Requires a knowledge of computer hardware and programming languages in order to perform non-standard system investigations and to conduct evaluation of the power system.
-Requires a good knowledge of English and communication skills to communicate effectively with others and to prepare comprehensive reports.
-This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of Grade XII in a Secondary, Commercial or Technical School plus a three-year course of concentrated study in the appropriate subjects obtained in the Province of Ontario from a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute or Community College or by having the equivalent level of education.
Experience :

-Requires specialized electric utility experience to credibly represent the Company in external organizations (e.g. NPCC, IESO) and to support and enhance business decisions.
-Requires experience with electrical systems and equipment and system modelling, tools and data.
-Requires experience in understanding the need for and impact of information and data requirements imposed by evolving market rules.
-Requires experience in understanding and rapidly responding to the asset information needs of investment planning, operations staff and corporate groups.
-Requires experience in all aspects of power system design and operation to understand equipment capabilities and characteristics to provide comprehensive analyses of system investigations, carry out studies related to system planning and related activities.
-Requires extensive experience in the design and application of computer programs, applicable to the electric electromagnetic transient programs, short circuit programs, reliability and other programs.
-Requires experience to understand and be conversant in specific features of special computer programs, in order to perform non-standard system investigations.
-Requires extensive experience in understanding the systemic issues and challenges in modelling equipment data, resolving ambiguity, recommending knowledgeable and defendable assumptions, based on sound judgement and representing/defending same to external bodies such as NPCC or the IESO.
-Requires experience to be familiar with the organization, contacts, sources of information, programs and facilities available to the group.
-A period of over eight years, up to and including ten years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.
