Job description

Reporting to the Waterworks Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing a variety of process, technical, mechanical, and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of the water and wastewater treatment systems and facilities.

The primary responsibilities for this position include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Ensure the proper functioning, operation and maintenance of the Water Filtration Plant (WFP), Elevated Tower, Water Pollution Control Centre (WPCC), pumping stations, distribution, and collection system, as required.
  • Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance tasks for all treatment and pumping equipment. Maintains and repairs pumps, other rotating machinery, valves, and other equipment as assigned. Performs predictive maintenance such as vibration analysis, alignment and perform preventive maintenance including lubrication and changing oils and fluids.
  • Clean, maintain, repair, and overhaul water and wastewater plant, pumping, treatment and all other associated mechanical equipment.
  • Coordinate and manage new equipment, repair inventory and replacement parts necessary to perform maintenance and repairs.
  • Liaise with external agencies, contractors, consultants, and/or suppliers in locating, troubleshooting, and repairing problems.
  • Perform a wide variety of maintenance, repair and treatment activities.
  • Assist with operations within the Water Distribution System and the Wastewater Collection System on an emergency basis as required, within permitted Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (‘MECP’) requirements.
  • Assist with administering data entry, record keeping and complete reports as necessary.
  • Diagnose operational problems and perform or direct necessary corrective action.
  • Assist with performing routine laboratory analysis and collect and test chemical & bacteriological samples.
  • Assist with setting operational parameter or process that controls the effectiveness and efficiency of the facility or subsystem.
  • Ensure proper monitoring inspections, evaluations and adjustments are properly recorded.
  • Assist with data collection for operational and regulatory reporting.
  • Troubleshooting day to day operational issues and developing solutions to problems.
  • Operate and/or adjust mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Assist in the training of other employees.
  • Availability to be placed on Stand-by and called-in when required.
  • Maintain a clean work environment.
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, attending all training, wearing personal protective equipment, and following guidelines in accordance with the Ontario Occupation Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following qualifications:

  • Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as Industrial Mechanic Millwright 433A.
  • Grade 12 minimum education with post-secondary certificates or college credit in Industrial Mechanical Maintenance or equivalent field of study.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence.
  • Must obtain Operator-in-Training (OIT) certification in water treatment, wastewater treatment, water distribution, and wastewater collection as specified in O.Reg. 128/04 of the Safe Drinking Water Act and O.Reg. 129/04 of the Ontario Water Resources Act within timeframe determined by the employer.
  • Completion of Industrial Millwright apprenticeship program of 8000 hours.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in industrial equipment maintenance, industrial electronics and/or controls equipment. Familiarity with high voltage/horsepower electric motors, large capacity pumps, hydraulic systems, PLC programming, telemetry equipment and motor control circuitry.
  • Must have an understanding of electrical, PLC (programmable logic control) and SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of maintenance manuals and other technical specifications.
  • Applied knowledge of mechanical, electrical and instrumentation techniques, practices and maintenance.
  • Basic computer skills/knowledge for process control and data entry, and ability to utilize various software systems including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of sampling and chemical techniques (lab testing).
  • Working knowledge of skilled trades for the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment and structures, including basic electrical repair, welding, plumbing, millwright.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and other relevant regulatory and legislative acts related to water and wastewater operations and maintenance which includes an understanding of the hazards and safety requirements of the job and use and storage of industrial chemicals.
  • Knowledge of TSSA rules and regulations.
  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing heavy physical labour at various job locations.
  • Ability to carry out directions with a minimum of supervision and with a high sense of responsibility.
  • Willingness to participate in the continuous development of skills and knowledge related to the industry and successfully complete all training associated with the position on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills when dealing with internal and external relations including co-workers and the public.
  • Sound mathematical, administration, and record keeping skills.
  • Capable of following instructions with a minimum of supervision and with a high sense of responsibility.

Asset Qualifications:

  • Higher class of Water Treatment and/or Wastewater Treatment operator certificate from the MECP would be considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems would be considered an asset.
