Job description

Position Summary

Cambrian College’s Library & Learning Commons has an immediate requirement for a Learning Strategist on a full-time basis.
Note: Internal candidates, as defined by the Full-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement, will be given first consideration.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, deliver, and monitor learning strategy plans for students based on formal and informal assessments, developed in both group and individual settings.
  • Instruct students in learning strategies using delivery methods specific to students’ unique strengths and challenges.
  • Deliver a plan of specific strategies in response to student requests, assessment tools, and/or information from referring sources such as faculty; support students with development of plans of action for success.
  • Identify students with a suspected learning disability; offer screening tools to make appropriate referrals to Accessibility; facilitate appropriate referrals to support student issues beyond study skills.
  • Liaise with faculty, the Glenn Crombie Centre for Accessibility, Counselling and Wellness, the Academic Success Centre, the Library and Learning Centre teams, and other college personnel to support student success.
  • Plan and deliver workshops to support student success and enhance learning skills; partner with program areas to identify trends and high-level needs.
  • Consult with Manager on student issues, such as academic integrity, or to recommend coordinated referrals; maintain confidential case records.
  • Research, develop, and maintain learning strategy resource materials; develop and facilitate basic learning skills training for staff.
  • Develop quality policies and procedures to support student retention; develop activity cycle(s) and strategic direction for learning strategies at the College.
  • Stay current with AODA and the Ontario Human Rights Code, College policies and procedures, and advising and retention best practices; develop familiarity with assistive technology in collaboration with accessibility advisors to develop and implement student accommodations.
  • Contribute as requested to support Ministry reporting and College requirements.
  • Track and monitor trends and patterns in service delivery; work with academic support and services teams to evaluate effectiveness of service delivery and identify key areas for improvement.
  • Respond to service delivery issues and problem-solve as required; provide professional development for student leaders as requested.
  • Identify barriers to equity and inclusion and work to reduce and remove barriers in training and orientations.

Qualifications

Required:


    • Four years of experience working in an educational environment, preferably at the postsecondary level, assisting students with learning strategies
    • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds who face learning barriers, including students with learning disabilities and/or students who are distressed.
    • Demonstrated teaching and workshop facilitation using experiential delivery models.
    • Experience providing learning strategies, study skills, and digital support.
    • Experience delivering and evaluating individualized interventions and techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team while acting as an effective role model for students.
    • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) including strong presentation skills and digital content creation skills.
    • Knowledge and demonstrated application of adult learning principles.

  • Assets/Preferred:
    • Specific education related to learning disabilities or education within a Learning Strategies Certificate program.
    • Experience working with students at the post-secondary level.
