Calgary Transit (CT) plans, designs, operates, maintains, and improves the City's entire public transportation system, including a growing fleet of buses, a Light Rail Transit (LRT) network, and accessible public transportation for people with disabilities. As the Power Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for developing budgets, preventative maintenance systems and processes, systems improvements, analysis and mitigation of systems failures, and maintenance of engineering records of the assigned assets/portfolio. Primary duties include:
Lead Substation Transfer to CT Rail Control Centre:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive project plan for the transfer of Traction Power Substations from the ENMAX Control Centre to the Calgary Transit Rail Control Centre.
- Coordinate with internal teams, ENMAX, CT Rail Control, City IT, CT Communications, Facilities Management, and Power Systems PSE Team for a seamless transition.
- Research and acquire suitable Power Control Software for the new Power Control Desk.
- Oversee testing and validation processes for communication links and control systems.
- Collaborate with Power Systems Lead to develop staffing plans for the new Power Control Desk at CT Rail Control Centre.
Manage LRT Lifecycle Projects and Upgrades:
- Manage and coordinate capital projects, prioritizing investments in existing infrastructure to ensure a safe and reliable traction power system for LRT operations.
- Provide design consultation and specification reviews for the traction power system in LRT extension projects.
- Support as-built inspections to ensure compliance with project specifications.
Other Responsibilities:
- Enhance the safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of the traction power system, particularly to the assigned assets/portfolio. Provide technical support for troubleshooting issues for asset portfolio.
- Analyze information to advance preventive asset maintenance programs, specifically focusing on the traction power system.
- Perform life cycle analysis, and monitor LRT traction power system for optimal safety and service levels.
- Investigate incidents, conduct root cause analysis, and prepare comprehensive reports.
- Prepare, review, and authenticate design and operational drawings, specifications, and reports.
- Provide technical support for procurement, construction, and testing, and commissioning, collaborating with other discipline designers and engineers. Additionally, undertake site surveys, and quality assurance inspections, interface with contractors, review submittals, and participate in the planning, development, design, verification, and commissioning of traction Power Systems. Ensure technical accuracy in the work produced by the design team and contractors, including plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- A degree in Electrical Engineering with at least 3 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications along with an ability to use data to develop and train models to automate analytical analysis.
- Preference will be given to individuals with some experience in an Operations Control Centre environment.
- A proven self-starter able to work individually with limited supervision, and capable of working in small to large focus groups assigned to complex tasks.
- Ability to communicate technical findings and work within a team environment, excellent technical analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, detail-oriented mindset, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proven ability to perform in a lead capacity on a project.
- Ability to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.
- Ability to identify systems enhancements and new capabilities, concept demonstrators, and capability business cases.
- A security clearance will be conducted.
