Athabasca UniversityPressis currently recruiting for the position of Production and Promotions Coordinator.

Please note this is a Temporary full time[1.0FTE] position starting February, 2024 and ending August, 2025.

The Position:

The Production and Promotions Coordinator is an experienced, creative individual who leads all Production and Promotions activities for AU Press's book publishing program. The incumbent will oversee the day-to-day production workflow necessary to publish up to twenty titles per year and will develop and execute title-by-title as well as Press-wide marketing efforts. The incumbent will be the main point of contact for authors during both the Production and promotion phase of the publishing process. They will work closely with the editorial team and Director to produce publications that meet the Press's high standard for quality and innovation and contribute to the overall scholarly reputation of the imprint.

The incumbent will manage all stages of production from typesetting through to preparation of final files for digital conversion and printing. They will also manage the development of cover designs and page layout. Within the area of promotions, they will produce seasonal catalogues and will develop marketing plans for new publications including activities such as pre-publication metadata creation, liaising with distributors, review notices, advertising, events, conferences, targeted direct mail, and social media campaigns.

Qualifications:

  • The incumbent is required to have as a minimum, a four-year bachelor's degree in the social sciences or humanities and three years of experience in the area of Production and promotion.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience of seven years will be considered.
  • Experience in scholarly and/or educational publishing is required.
  • The incumbent must have a sound knowledge of print production processes, including the principles of graphic design and text layout.
  • Must have a working knowledge of digital book production processes, including file formats and functionality.
  • Knowledge of requirements for inclusion of illustrative material for print and digital production, including appropriate format and quality considerations, as well as accessibility standards and copyright.
  • Experience working with social media platforms (in particular Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter), including social media management tools and the related business intelligence analytics.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual Style and APA style is required.
  • Excellent working skills in a Windows environment.
  • Basic knowledge of book metadata creation (ONIX) as it relates to promotion.
  • Basic knowledge of multimedia and desktop publishing software programs (Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).
  • An ability to proofread on a professional level is essential.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required to collaborate with professional scholars as is the ability to write promotional copy for marketing purposes.
  • Knowledge of the financial aspects of scholarly publishing
  • An ability to contribute to strategic planning
  • Ability to provide solutions that, where possible, satisfy the requirements of various stakeholders with limited consultation and advice.
  • Ability to set priorities and deadlines within a complex project management environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an emphasis on tact and diplomacy that allow the incumbent to work within a group context that includes department staff, freelancers, and authors.
  • An ability to adapt and manage change resulting from the adoption of new production processes and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the open access movement as it relates to shifting priorities in distribution and impact assessment.
