Vancouver Island University invites applications for the role of Professor, Principles of Teachingand Learning and Indigenous Educationin our Faculty of Education. Education plays a key role in Truth and Reconciliation. The Faculty of Education at VIU is committed to its responsibility in responding to the calls to action of the TRC and to preparing its pre-service teachers to meet the Standards for Professional Educators in BC.

 

The Faculty has the following opening for a regular full-time faculty member. The successful candidate will participate in the Faculty's ongoing efforts to enhance the Teaching and Learning environment in incorporating Indigenous perspectives and worldviews.

 

In this role, you will be a part of our team which strives to provide an inclusive educational environment that supports and encourages preservice teachers to be professionals focused on equity and education for all. The position includes the teaching of Principles of Teaching and Learning (Elementary Focus) in the Bachelor of Education Program, and three additional courses which could include:

  • EDTE 520 Curriculum and Instruction: Language Arts (3 credits)
  • EDTE 330 Issues in Aboriginal Education (3 credits)

 

Depending on the expertise of the candidate, other/additional courses may be available. As the Professor, Principles of Teaching and Learning, you will be expected to become highly engaged in educational leadership activities within the Faculty of Education which may include collaboration on curriculum design, the development and implementation of innovative teaching practices and other Teaching and Learning initiatives, particularly in the area of Indigenous pedagogies.

Required Qualifications:

  • A doctorate degree in a related field (i.e., Teacher Education, Indigenous Education, Curriculum and Pedagogy) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of experience and knowledge of appropriate teaching methodology in the K-12 system including Indigenous Principles of Teaching and Learning.
  • Willingness and ability to function in a team setting; responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.
  • Commitment to the development of students as teachers.
  • Experience establishing connections with Indigenous communities.
  • Eligibility for BC Teaching Certificate or equivalent.
