Autism Nova Scotia delivers programming in Halifax and in nine communities across Nova Scotia through our Regional Autism Centres. Our three program divisions are: Social & Community Inclusion; Employment Support; and Family and Caregiver Support.

POSITION TITLE: Program Facilitator – Pictou County

POSITION DETAILS : Casual contract with Flexible hours –up to 10 hrs/week (some evenings/weekends)

POSITION LOCATION : New Glasgow (Travel required within region)
POSITION START DATE: April 8, 2024

DIRECT REPORT: Chapter Support Manager

Program summary:

Autism Nova Scotia is a community-based organization that builds understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals on the Autism Spectrum and their families through leadership, advocacy, training, and programming across the lifespan.

The Program Facilitator will work in collaboration with the Pictou County Chapter Autism Support Coordinator and PC Chapter Program Committee to locally plan, implement and evaluate inclusive social, recreation/leisure, life skills and educational programs for the regional autism center. Programs will take place at community locations across the region. The Program Facilitator will support the recruitment and management of volunteers for implementing programs and organize/plan special events as needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide direct program support to children, youth, adults, and families with ASD in a community-based setting(s)

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate social/recreational programs. This may include promoting programs, organizing registration for participants, and booking outings, activities, and facilities.

  • Provide positive role modeling/mentoring and support to volunteers, autistic individuals and families who attend programs.

  • Accountable for participants’ health, safety, and whereabouts during the program delivery

  • Adherence to a high ethical standard of support for any person living with autism; respecting individuals rights to be treated with dignity and respect; high discretion & respect for confidentiality a must.

  • Ensure good communication with staff, parents, and programmers.

  • Support organizing/implementing special events, as needed

  • Adhere to any other duties that may be assigned


Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary education in a related field/program preferred or equivalent experience accepted

  • A clear, current Criminal background Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Search is required

  • Up to date first aid and CPR Certification is considered an asset

  • Up to date NVCI is considered an asset


Minimum Knowledge and Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with autism or developmental disabilities is considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of evidence-based strategies for supporting individuals with autism

  • Knowledge and experience in planning and facilitating recreation-based activities and community events


Minimum Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be passionate about inclusion

  • Must have good organizational and time management skills

  • Volunteer management skills and ability to recruit and support program volunteers

  • Professional and uses good judgement regarding client interactions, relationships, and safety

  • Comfortable with a dynamic work environment, and willing to work in a variety of settings

  • Demonstrated leadership experience overseeing groups

  • Good communication skills (written and oral)

  • Calm professional demeanor under pressure

  • Reliable and Responsible

  • Ability to work independently and work collaboratively with a team

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Able to be on their feet for long periods of time.

Essential and Other Related Job Duties:

  • A valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle is an asset.
