Overview

Coady Institute, St. Francis Xavier University welcomes interest in the position of Program Teaching Staff - Resilient and Adaptive Communities (Climate Focus). This is a new two-year term position for a dynamic, innovative individual who excels at teaching, research, and community work focused on applying a climate change and adaptation lens to the maintenance and creation of Resilient and Adaptive Communities. The incumbent's work must be grounded in community-led approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Under the supervision of the Director of Programs at Coady Institute, the Program Teaching Staff - Resilient and Adaptive Communities (Climate Focus) will develop and expand our area of work around climate change mitigation and adaptation with community leaders and organizations locally and globally. Key areas of work include the development of courses and contribution to flagship Coady education programs, knowledge building and research, and working directly on a range of programs or projects of varying sizes and complexity. The incumbent will demonstrate a commitment to building partnerships and supporting leaders and development practitioners who are focused on helping their communities concretely advance social change.

The role requires a strong understanding of the field of climate mitigation and adaptation at the community level (both conceptually and in practice), a mix of demonstrated community development experience as well as strong teaching or facilitation skills rooted in adult education principles. The Program Teaching Staff - Resilient and Adaptive Communities (Climate Focus) will bring their leadership and networks in this field to along with analytical capacity, research and writing skills to the design and delivery of our curriculum, education programs, and research initiatives. The role also requires strong capacities in applying gender and intersectional lenses to the work. Particular attention will also be given to applicants who engage in asset-based, and anti-racist, or decolonizing teaching and methodological approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop curriculum, teach, and facilitate modules focused on community-based approaches to climate change, adaptation, and mitigation (as well as other thematic areas as appropriate and related to subject matter expertise), both online and in person, as part of Coady educational programs.
  • Contribute to and collaborate as a co-facilitator or project lead in Coady project partnerships, overseeing technical aspects of programs.
  • In partnership with other program staff, develop and manage on-campus, off-campus and online courses and community initiatives, including strengthening community relationships, participant selection and mentorship components.
  • Provide inputs on community development program designs for other Coady programs.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge creation and mobilization outcomes related to their area of expertise.
  • Prepare and contribute to research and funder reports, as required.
  • Contribute to the life of Coady and Coady programs as a mentor, advisor, and colleague.
  • Other duties as stipulated in the AUT Collective Agreement.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in the advancement of community-based climate work.
  • Minimum master's degree in a related area of study.
  • Demonstrated expertise with partnerships in one or more developing countries or regions.
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience with adult education methodologies, teaching, and facilitation.
  • Experience in curriculum development and the management of educational and community programs or projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in gender-based analysis.
  • Well-developed research, analytical and writing skills, with a supporting track record of publications (practitioner, academic or popular).
  • Capacity for networking and managing complex, collaborative, cross-organizational relationships and/or communities of practice.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment while ensuring that outcomes are achieved.
  • Curiosity, open-mindedness, ability to think strategically and outside the box, and a high degree of comfort with evolving project plans and complexity.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as required.

Considered Assets:

  • Additional areas of expertise that intersect with one or more of Coady's thematic areas (Strengthening Local Economies, Participation, Accountability and Governance, and Asset Based Citizen-Led Development)
  • PhD or equivalent in field of expertise.
  • Fluency in French or a language in addition to English
  • Overall knowledge and understanding of climate emergencies and its social, economic and security impacts on communities.
