Teck is looking for motivated geoscientists to support Teck’s exploration efforts in the world-class Red Dog District in the De Long Mountain range of northwestern Alaska, U.S.A. The successful applicant will be cross-shifting and supporting the site lead of the geotechnical drill programs at the advanced Aktigiruq exploration project 8 miles northwest of the Red Dog Operations. The Project Geotechnical Specialist will collaborate with a large, diverse, multidisciplinary geoscience team (~30 members) based out of Teck’s remote Red Dog Operations. Field programs are conducted from approximately April to October, with rotations consisting of roughly 15 days on (in the field), followed by 13 days off. The successful candidate will be a dynamic geotechnical professional with experience in executing geotechnical and hydrogeological field investigation programs at the development site, alongside the project exploration group and contractors/consultants. A focus on driving results, with a commitment to teamwork and continuous improvements is imperative for the role. A significant field contractor management component is also expected within the role as the successful applicant will be helping in managing day-to-day activities on the third-party geotechnical contractor. 

 

The nature of the work is diversified and will require both strong practical and analytical skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, strong organizational and task prioritization skills, and the flexibility to handle changing priorities. 

 

This role is a short-term-temporary contract from approximately April to October.

 

This role is located at our site in Alaska (Red Dog), therefor we are open to US citizens/PR who have the legal ability to work in the US. As well, those with the legal capacity to obtain a US work visa who are non-US citizens/PR (Canadian Citizens/PR). We will provide support to non-US citizens/PR to obtain a US work visa.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader and demonstrate an exemplary record of leadership in health, safety, and sustainability. Take actions to stop or defer work if health and safety conditions are deemed unsatisfactory or unmanageable. Actively seek opportunities to recognize health and safety hazards, resolve safety issues, and work to mitigate associated risks in the workplace. 
  • Collaborate regularly and effectively with subject matter experts (geotechnical, hydrogeological, and mine design) in Teck’s Project Delivery Group, Technical Services, and Red Dog Operations. 
  • Support geotechnical program planning, preparations, and revisions as required during the field program. 
  • Provide on-site project management of third-party geotechnical contractors and coordination with drill contractors including the ability to make timely operational and logistical decisions to progress the field investigation.  
  • Complete timely and accurate productivity and program status tracking, with insights and recommendations about opportunities for improvements  
  • Provide timely and high-quality contributions to the program updates, close-out and other technical reports.  
  • Encouraging a culture of teamwork between all stakeholders by promoting collaboration and open communications.  

 

Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Geological, Geotechnical, Civil, or Mining Engineering.  
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant geotechnical experience including field planning of geotechnical programs, conducting mine-related geotechnical programs (hydrogeology, downhole installs, instrumentation and surveys (e.g. acoustic televiewer, VWP), and oriented core) and/or supervising geotechnical contractors.  
  • Registered of eligible or registered as a Professional Geologist or Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).  
  • Previous experience working with and managing geotechnical diamond drill programs in remote locations. Knowledge of geologic and resource modeling would be an asset. 
  • Superior communication (spoken and written English), leadership, and interpersonal skills.  
  • Demonstrated organizational, planning, and decision-making skills. 
  • First Aid Training and/or Wilderness First Aid training is an asset. 
  • Comfortable living in camp settings in remote locations. Comfortable traveling in and able to work safely in and around helicopters. 
  • Eligibility to work in the United States is required.

Salary Range: $101, 000 - $125, 000 CAD


The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
