Job description

Duties:

We invite applications from accomplished university educators seeking to join a collegial department where teaching innovation and student success are highly valued. We seek applicants who share our passion for high-quality undergraduate education and can skillfully infuse their teaching with their scholarly work. The successful candidates will mentor undergraduate students in research and scholarly activity.

We invite applications from qualified applicants for two faculty positions:

  1. Area of specialization: experimental neuropsychology or clinical neuropsychology
  2. Area of specialization: lifespan development, cognition, and/or research methods.

We offer both a BSc and BA Psychology degree option. Course descriptions and more information about the Psychology Department can be found here.

As an open-access institution, VIU welcomes a wide range of students, many of whom are first-generation learners in a post-secondary environment. The successful candidates for these faculty positions will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles and skilled in fostering a climate of inclusion and effective support for student success. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service.

Instruction includes the preparation and delivery of lectures, assessment and evaluation of students, facilitation of students' learning, and provision of student support during office hours. The successful candidate will also be expected to apply departmental norms for evaluating student learning in psychology and will participate in a wide range of activities inside and outside of the classroom, including student support, institutional, faculty, and departmental committee meetings, research, and other initiatives and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines.

The successful candidates will be required to teach eight sections per academic year. Full-time Faculty Members who teach upper-level courses receive one (1) section of release time per year.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in psychology from an APA or CPA-accredited institution. 
  • Experience in successfully teaching courses in one or more of the following areas: Position 1: experimental or clinical neuropsychology. Position 2: lifespan development, cognition and/or research methods.
