The Opportunity

Reporting to the Parks and Transportation Supervisor, our Operators are an important part of the team, performing a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure assets such as, road and signal maintenance, snow and ice control, storm water maintenance, and Parks and open spaces maintenance, to enhance the safety and quality of life for our citizens and overall community well-being.
Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of small tools and equipment used in the maintenance of streets, storm sewers, snow and ice control, Parks and open spaces, cemeteries, and other Public Works functions.
- Perform manual labour, such as shoveling, lifting heavy objects, grass trimming etc.
- Maintain, and repair Parks and open spaces, trails, outdoor sports facilities, green spaces, and the city cemeteries (weeding, watering, mowing, seeding etc.).
- Perform preventative maintenance, minor repairs and upkeep on all tools and equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Keep detailed accurate records and logs daily in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Maintain positive public relations through excellent customer service.
- Work assignments will depend on the season and will vary between Parks and/or Transportation.
- Perform other duties as required.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Previous year of experience operating equipment is an asset.
- Previous municipal experience is considered an asset.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR, and WHIMIS, are assets.
- Be part of an on-call roster on a rotational basis (every 10-12 weeks). There are times where weekend work may be required.
- Willingness to learn and increase and maintain certifications.
- Ability to use the necessary hand and power tools for work assignments.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, to work with internal departments, community members, and stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of tools, with the ability to use technology.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and the desire to contribute to a positive safety culture by adhering to all safety standards under OH&S and by compliance with all safe work practices, policies, directives, and procedures.
- Meet physical requirements for extended periods of time, lifting of heavy goods and equipment up to 50lbs, standing and sitting for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, twisting etc., and working in all weather conditions.
- Hire is dependent on the ability to provide a clean criminal record check.
- Possess and retain a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License; and the ability to provide a driver’s abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behaviour.
