Public Works Utility III

(Full-Time)
Public Works and Parks Operations Department
Overview
The City of Chilliwack Public Works and Parks Operations Department – Public Works Division requires a Public Works Utility III – downtown maintenance to assist the Public Works Supervisor III, through reliable performance of general sanitation duties downtown Chilliwack. The incumbent in this position will be responsible for maintaining the litter control, graffiti removal, and general maintenance of the downtown.

Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor II and III, you will: Assist management in the efficient operation in the Department through reliable performance in operation performing:
In order for you to succeed in this role, you will need to have the following requirements and skills:

  • Able to operate assigned equipment skillfully and in accordance with acceptable practices.
  • Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment related to sanitation and public space clean up.
  • Able to communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, property owners and the public;
  • Work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision;
  • Inspect and organize the clean up of designated downtown and surrounding areas.
  • Able to recognize workplace hazards related to equipment operation within a variety of Public Works projects.
  • Work closely with the Parks and Bylaw departments, the RCMP and the public and the private sector to ensure quality departmental services are provided.


Duties

  • Performs public space disorder clean-up, which includes encampment, illegal dumping and abandoned items collection and clean-up, and removal of human and animal waste, graffiti removal, pressure washing, fence repair
  • Services public space sanitation receptacles, bus shelters, Tunnels and other surface assets, roads, pedestrian corridors, or pedestrian-related facilities, including monitoring and evaluating condition, making minor repairs and recommending major repairs.
  • Operates various sanitation and public space cleaning equipment, performing required inspections and ensuring equipment is maintained in a safe, sanitary condition.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Report any damaged street of bus stop garbage cans
  • Report any broken glass and other damaged bus shelters
  • Preform minor repairs to all street and bus garbage cans


Required knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the refuse collection and public space sanitation.
  • Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment related to sanitation and public space clean up.
  • Ability to communicate with courtesy and tact in obtaining and/or handing out data or information.
  • Ability to complete records, and comprehend and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to prioritize scheduled and assigned work, adjusting daily priorities to meet department commitments and daily assigned objectives.
  • Ability to work independently.



Training and experience required

  • Completion of Grade 12 and a minimum of 3 months’ related experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement.
