Fisheries Branch is currently recruiting for the role of Regional Fisheries Manager (work schedule can be split between 75 7th Avenue in Gimli and 14 Futlz avenue in Winnipeg).

The Manitoba Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources' Fisheries Branch is seeking qualified individuals to join the fisheries team. Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be physically able to undertake the duties of the position, including conducting field work in rough terrain and on water, during all seasons and under adverse weather conditions
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and overtime as required
  • Must be able to travel to and work in remote locations for extended periods within the Province of Manitoba, travelling by various means such as chartered aircraft, boat, ATV, and snowmobile
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 licence
  • Must possess and maintain pleasure craft operator licence

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Degree in Biology, Fisheries, Environmental Science, Resource Management or Enforcement, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating fisheries management actions, plans, programs and projects, including fisheries field programs.
  • Experience with the application of fisheries management principles and practices such as fish stocking, fish stock assessments, habitat assessments and appropriate rehabilitation methodologies.
  • Experience with angling regulation and management, commercial fishery regulation, management and eco-certification, and/or commercial fishing tourism management.
  • Experience supervising staff, including addressing performance management issues, developing work plans and learning/training plans.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities including familiarity with Indigenous consultation and engagement processes.
  • Strong written communication skills including preparing management plans, assessment reports, project proposals and technical reports, with a high degree of accuracy, clarity and conciseness.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information in a clear manner including communication, engagement and consultation with Indigenous communities, resource users, stakeholders and the public.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster positive working relationships and resolve conflict within internal and external relationships.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize work activities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently.
Desired:
  • Experience in budget planning, administration and management.

Duties:
Manitoba is home to many valuable fisheries, which support Indigenous sustenance harvest, commercial fishing, and recreational angling. The Regional Fisheries Manager is a key member of a dedicated team of Fisheries Managers and biologists responsible for the management of these valuable fisheries resources.

Reporting to the Section Manager, the Regional Fisheries Manager is responsible for the management of the fisheries within the Central Region of Manitoba. This position develops and delivers the Regional programs that support aboriginal, commercial and sport fisheries within the scope of departmental policies and strategies.
