Residential Youth Workers
Casual Positions
Location – Dryden

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Residential Youth Worker (RYW) is responsible for providing direct supervision to youth who have been placed in the Agency Operated Group Home. The RYW ensures the strengths of youth are acknowledged and encouraged and their needs met according to AAFS philosophy, First Nation mandates, Group Home policies and procedures and Provincial regulations and standards. The RYW reports directly to the Residence Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Child and Youth Worker Diploma and two (2) years direct experience is preferred, however a combination of related education, experience and skills may be considered;
  • Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Regulations, and Licensing Standards;
  • Knowledge of Customary Care and the philosophy of service delivery, First Nation communities, family structure, and local customs and traditions;
  • Knowledge and comprehension of First Nation cultural beliefs, values and norms, ceremonies, teachings and a commitment to learn, participate, advocate and promote AAFS and the communities;
  • Knowledge and understanding of FASD, the effects and impacts of FASD and strategies to build on the strengths of youth with FASD and to meet their needs;
  • Experience working with high risk and special needs youth with a demonstrated ability to provide structured activities including cultural events and to interact in ways that encourage positive communications that establish and maintain trusting relationships;
  • Knowledge and understanding of developmental stages of children and youth including the Traditional Life Stages as understood by the northern communities of Treaty #3;
  • Knowledge of community resources and an ability to work with Elders, Healers and Clinicians;
  • Ability to ensure the safety and well-being of the youth at all times;
  • Ability to provide culturally competent services to the youth that are congruent to the core values and beliefs practiced in response to the Rights of the Child;
  • Ability to perform light housekeeping duties, grocery shopping and meal planning and preparation;
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive case notes and reports detailing events during each shift including activities, accomplishments, positive and/or negative behaviors and/or concerns;
  • Ability to work in a team environment, share knowledge and strategies and know when to consult with and seek direction from the Residence Manager;
  • Ability to work shift work and report to work on short notice in relation to service requirements;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, planning, time management, organizational and problem-solving;
  • Must be committed to ensure the highest level of confidentiality at all times;
  • Must possess a valid Ontario G Driver’s Licence, be willing to travel and provide a Drivers Abstract;
  • Must provide a current Health Assessment and Immunization Record; and
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin is preferred and a definite asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work is performed in an indoor and home environment operated 24/7 by the agency with children and youth that may become sick, uncooperative or display any other form of harmful or threatening behavior. Requires physical stamina, clarity of thought, visual and hearing acuity to provide supervision, care and support to children and youth on a twelve (12) hour shift basis. Must be able to stand, walk, stretch, bend, kneel, crouch, climb and lift/carry up to 40 pounds. Provides local or regional travel for scheduled appointments, visits, and recreational activities for the children and youth in various seasonal weather conditions.

AAFs requires all employees, contractors, students, and volunteers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, absent of a valid medical exemption or other reasonable consideration pursuant to the Human Rights Code of Ontario.

Salary Range: $40,769 – $50,000 per annum
