Job description

Reporting to the Director of Credit and Administration, the Retail Credit Officer enriches members lives by providing, timely and accurate information and exemplary Retail Credit Underwriting service to internal user groups and membership. This position is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the credit union’s Retail Credit Underwriting services as well as other administrative duties as required. This position requires an individual with strong analytical and communication skills and the ability to work in partnership with respect to other credit union functions. The incumbent will be self-motivated and have excellent administrative, time management, problem solving and prioritizing skills.

The preferred candidate has completed a University Degree in Business or a related program. In addition, the ideal candidate will have four to five years’ retail underwriting experience. Previous credit union experience would be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered as well as other relevant working experience.


  • Underwrites retail lending applications and mitigates losses through strong understanding of underwriting, alignment with the credit union’s risk tolerance, and high commitment to member relationships
  • Reviews Retail Credit applications, analyzes financial information, assesses credit worthiness, and approves credit files within approved limits; makes recommendations to appropriated level of escalation
  • Determines the term and condition of the application including the required documentation for transactions, verifies, registers, renews, discharges, and administers all required security and searches
  • Assists in providing Retail Credit Underwriting training and workshops to support internal users
  • Performs all administrative Retail Credit Underwriting duties including investigating, adjudicating, approving, and auditing
  • Participates in retail collection and delinquency activities and reporting in accordance with established policies and processes to maximize efficiency and prevent financial and reputational loss, within the credit union’s retail risk appetite
  • Follows up on delinquent credit files as directed and in accordance with established collections and delinquency policies
  • Conducts retail lending operational risk and compliance audits as required and in accordance with the credit union’s policies and procedures
  • Provides relevant information to internal user groups and makes recommendations to management as required
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of credit union lending services and products • Ensures all activities are in compliance with sound business practices, legislation, regulations, by-laws, policies and procedures as it relates to position requirements
  • Adheres to security procedures as they pertain to the position
  • Performs other duties as assigned and provides support as directed by reporting manager
