As the Safety Codes Officer (SCO)-Electrical, you will perform duties under the authority of the Safety Codes Act Bylaw 39M2018, Alberta Safety Codes Act, and Alberta Permit Regulation. This position reports to one of the Leaders of Electrical Inspections and follows directions from the Senior Safety Codes Officers. Primary duties include:

  • Help clients resolve issues related to design and construction of a building or building systems resulting from electrical infrastructure within the building or in public spaces.

  • Review thoroughly and work with existing inspection processes to ensure that the onsite electrical installation is consistent with approved electrical blueprints, drawings, documents and relevant acts, codes, standards, regulations, and bylaws. Summarize the findings and notify the client in the form of a SCO notice, email, or telephone call.

  • Assess permit values related to the electrical installation, work performed in relation to the electrical scope of the project and in compliance with bylaw 39M2018.

  • Act as a Building Regulations technical assistance center (TAC) member answering phone/email and code related technical inquiries from the general public, building owners, contractors, trades and SCOs.

  • Enforce thorough legislation with persons and companies building and working without permits.

  • Ensure that unsafe conditions are identified and rectified within the timelines listed in the SCO notice; conduct follow up site inspections, investigations, and interviews.

  • Process, review, and approve customer electrical code variance requests.

  • Conduct remote video inspections.

 
Qualifications 
  • A completed Journeyperson Electrician certificate or equivalent recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training and at least 6 years of electrical field experience; OR

  • A completed Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma and at least 8 years of related experience; OR

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 8 years of related experience.

  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR; a valid Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.

  • Previous electrical construction experience working with on-site wiring on residential, multi-family, commercial and industrial installations is required.

  • Experience as a Group A Safety Codes Officer (SCO) - Electrical and/or an Electrical Master's certificate is an asset.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Demonstrate good judgment and effective decision-making skills.

  • Maintain a high attention to detail when handling an increased workload with changing priorities.

 
Pre-employment Requirements 
  • A security clearance will be conducted. 
  • Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills. 
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit. 
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
 
Pre-employment Drug Test:An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
