Job description

arc programs is currently accepting applications for a School-Based Targeted Prevention Worker to join the Changes Program which is based out of our Kelowna Office.

The School-Based Prevention Worker is responsible for providing targeted substance prevention and early intervention services to students attending middle schools in School District #23. Counsellors will provide direct service primary on- site at assigned schools.

Hours / Schedule

Full-Time,Permanent
Averaging 40.0 - hours per-week

Please be aware that this is a year-round position. Services will be offered within the school environment throughout the academic year, transitioning to community-based outreach during the summer months.

During the school year, vacation time must be scheduled during school breaks
(winter holidays, spring break etc.). Any exception must be approved.

Responsibilities

The School-Based Prevention Worker will deliver the following interventions, strategies, and services:

Specific Duties Include:

  • Building capacity with school staff to prevent problematic substance use, using a targeted approach to substance use issues.
  • Providing individual or group-based services designed to prevent or reduce substance use among students; to reduce the harm associated with substance use and to promote / support resiliency and protective factors.
  • Working in collaboration with arc programs Changes School-Based Counsellors,
  • School District staff and other involved professionals to provide effective delivery of the School-Based Targeted Prevention Program.
  • Identifying students at risk, and providing assessments, brief counselling, service planning, and relevant referrals.
  • Providing support, orientation and encouragement to youth engaging in community services.
  • Liaising with community service providers to facilitate service coordination and integration.
  • Providing education to the broader school community (teachers, support staff, parents) with respect to substance use and activities to build resiliency and reduce risk factors.

Qualifications

A BSW or a bachelor’s degree in Addictions Counselling, Social Services or Human
Services or discipline (BSW, CYC, BA in Psychology etc.) with a minimum of 2-years relevant experience is preferred.

Candidates must have a valid Driver's License, and a sound personal vehicle to provide outreach support.

Successful applicants will be subject to a screening process, including a criminal record search, to confirm suitability for the position.

Wage / Benefits

$ 28.95 - $ 32.20 to start, based on relevant experience and education.

Upon successful completion of a probationary period, full-time employees
(minimum 20-hrs per week) are eligible for a full benefit package (including dental plan, vision coverage, life insurance, extended medical coverage, long-term disability plan, and RRSP contributions).

New full-time employees are eligible for 3-weeks paid vacation to start, as well as paid sick days as described in agency policy.
