SUMMARY:
Under the direction and supervision of the Kiwetin School Principal, the Kiwetin School Counselor will provide services, in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures:
1. Provide counseling services to student;
2. Supervise designated students;
3. Communicate with parents and members of the community;
4. Maintain records and program administration;
5. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Offering school counselling services to students encountering psychological and/or emotional challenges.
- Assessing the emotional and psychological status of designated students to determine the nature of the presenting issues(s) and the potential risk to the student’s health and safety.
- Providing appropriate programming to help designated students or contact appropriate services provider to refer the student for help.
- Providing pro-active classroom sessions to build student resilience and to help prevent reactive behaviours.
- Participating in all professional activity days or activities and continuing to pursue their personal education to be informed of new information and techniques in this field.
- Meeting with the Principal, Education Director, Teachers, and/or other professionals on a regular basis to ensure that the needs of the students are understood and being met.
- Addressing children’s developmental needs with those involved.
- Participating in school-related community activities.
- Developing and maintaining current, accurate and confidential files.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Post-Secondary diploma in Social Service and/or related field in counseling along with 1 year + experience.
- Belong to the order of Registered Social Worker of Quebec or Ontario.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of Timiskaming First Nation (TFN) services, administrative and operational policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of various therapeutic theories and practices and facilitating individual and group sessions.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention, anger diffusion and conflict intervention and resolution.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply current practices in the management of risk factors for addiction, mental health disorders and family violence necessary for such cases.
- Knowledge of school emergency procedures.
- Knowledge of all Microsoft Office programs, email and internet.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity and/or willingness to learn about it.
- Courtesy and respect in dealing with the public in a positive manner.
