Primary Purpose of Position

Maintain and enhance the operations of the Steelmaking facility by ensuring scrap suppliers adhere to supply standards by tracking performance and market trends and scrap is handled, sorted and batched properly. Supervise scrap inspection and loading.

Reports To : Division Manager Steelmaking

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

· Administer the company safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the Operating facility.

· Promote safety by various means (safety contacts, safety tours, incident investigations and follow-up, MSDS and JSA review, equipment condition, etc.) and leads by example.

· Ensure adherence to all environmental control procedures and relevant codes and standards.

· Assist in the refinement of the Stelco Scrap Specification as required.

· Audit the quality level of supplied scrap through visual inspection, measurements and chemistry performance and produce reports.

· Analyze the impact of scrap and the scrap model on the overall operations of Steelmaking.

· Develop techniques to determine the yield of various scrap types and organize scrap yard activities to conduct trials.

· Track load rejection statistics and ensure compensatory actions are completed.

· Manage the inventory of scrap in the various storage locations.

· Ensure non-conforming materials are identified, segregated and reallocated appropriately.

· Conduct audits of scrap supplier yards and liaison with various vendors both on site and off site.

· Supervise training of Scrap Inspections and ensure conformance to the scrap specification.

· Manage and develop the training and qualification program.

· Track various performance metrics and report on them.

Education/Experience/Qualifications

· 3yr College Diploma in an Engineering or other technical discipline.

· 3-5 years Steel/Heavy Industrial related maintenance experience preferred.

· Prior supervisory experience is an asset.

· Experience in the scrap market/industry a strong asset.

· Competent in the use of Statistical Quality Control.

Job Skills and Knowledge

· Strong oral and written communication skills;

· Good interpersonal and leadership skills;

· Good problem solving and data analysis skills;

· Ability and desire to work in a shop floor environment – this is a very ‘hands-on’ position;

· Strong computer skills;

· An enthusiastic approach and ability to learn quickly and assume responsibility;

· As a manager/supervisor of the company, qualified candidates for this role also must demonstrate the ability to manage change, communicate effectively, and lead high-performance teams.

A valid Ontario G or G2 Drivers license and vehicle is required
