Job description

MEC is more than a store. We’re a hub for the outdoor community, a leader in sustainability, and a place where you can be yourself. We also love bikes. All of ‘em! As a Bike Mechanic, you’ll use your know-how to members get out on two wheels.

Whatever the bike, you'll provide a stellar shop experience that keeps riders coming back. You’ll support everyone from experienced enduro riders to first-time commuters. We work on a bit of everything at MEC, so you’ll really up your skills as a mechanic while working here.

Oh, and you’ll also be surrounded by good people who love to get outside. We asked staff what their favourite thing was about working for MEC, and the overwhelming answer was “the people.” Expect to make a few new riding and outdoor buddies along the way.

The role

As a Bike Mechanic, you’ll help make MEC the go-to shop for every rider. And you won’t be locked away in the back of the shop. Whether you’re writing up work orders or wrapping bar tape, you’ll share your enthusiasm for bikes, components and repair to keep members rolling smoothly. Got strong SRAM vs Shimano opinions? Love a particular brand of chain lube? Take pride in your brake bleeding technique? This role is right up your alley.

What a day in the life looks like:

  • Ask members straight-forward questions about bike-related issues they’re facing.

  • Write easy to read and thorough work orders for incoming bikes, and repair bicycles as per work order assessments and instructions.

  • Inspect bikes for damage, worn parts or components that need tuning (wheels, derailleurs, bearings, etc).

  • Assess and replace components as needed/requested.

  • Recommend parts based on repairs, type of bicycle, budget, and your own experience.

  • Call members to provide updates on repairs and additional work needed.

  • Ensure every bike leaving your stand is safe, fixed and ready to ride.

  • Be part of a dialed, fun team who take pride in running a tidy and efficient shop.

  • Assemble new bikes out of the box for the store floor.

  • Help answer member questions during busy times.

  • Learn about new products, sustainability and repair skills.

  • Above all, help more people get excited about getting outside, whether on two wheels or otherwise.

You might be who we’re looking for if:

  • You like working with a diverse, inclusive, hands-on and collaborative team.

  • You’ve got a passion for bikes and keeping them tuned.

  • You have 1 year of experience as a Bike Mechanic and understand the basics of repairing every part of a bike (wheels, brakes, derailleurs, bearings, etc.).

  • Major asset if you can tackle the tricky stuff: bleeding brakes, overhauling suspensions, or building a bike from the frame up.

  • You’re comfortable fixing bikes in the back of the shop and chatting with members on the store floor.

  • You have a good natured and welcoming vibe and genuinely like helping people.

  • You go out of your way to provide a stellar bike shop experience.

  • You can lift 50 lb. and walk 10,000 steps per day.

  • You have a killer playlist to share for when it’s your day to pick music.

  • You’re not afraid of a “flat fixing” timed showdown.

  • Bonus points if you know how to wax and work on skis!

  • Previous bike shop and mechanic experience is a huge plus (but not a must – if you’re super stoked to join us, we want to hear from you).

  • You’re ready to up your skills as a mechanic – super senior or sorta junior, we’ll provide the training to elevate your skills.

Availability

  • Open to work Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Big points if you’re available to work a variety of shifts between Monday and Friday, 7:00am and 9:00pm.

Equal opportunity

MEC is an equal opportunity employer. We’re proud to work with our people to create a diverse workplace, which accommodates individuals of all abilities, backgrounds and identities. We welcome and encourage applications from people with disabilities. Tell us what you need during the hiring process, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Outdoorsy perks

Yep, discounts are a thing here. But an extra perk of working at MEC bike shops mean you get discounts on gear for pretty much every outdoor activity out there (including bikes, don’t worry). Outdoor field training and support for big adventures are also part of our benefits – check out our for some highlights.
