THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Spruce Grove is looking for a temporary Labourer to maintain the City turf, grass, sport fields, pathways, trails and parks.
The term of this temporary full-time position (40 hours per week) is from May 6, 2024 to August 30, 2024.
The starting rate of pay is: $21.71 per hour. This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Manual Labour
  • Cutting grass using riding mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, trimmers and edgers.
  • Cutting and removing sod.
  • Planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding and trimming flowers, plants and trees.
  • Cutting and clearing trees and brush using chain saws.
  • Hauling and splitting firewood.
  • Manually digging/shovelling holes and trenches.
  • Installing posts, railings, and bollards.
  • Repairing picnic tables, park benches, backstops, and dugouts.
  • Manually shovelling and raking dirt, shale, gravel, snow and other materials.
  • Manually sweeping and hosing down surfaces.
  • Sanding sidewalks.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks and trailers.
  • Collect refuse in parks, boulevards, trails and sports fields.

2. Equipment Operation
  • Operating and minor maintenance of light vehicles and tools in a safe manner to complete
assigned tasks.
  • Operating a dump box truck to haul material.

3. Other Duties
  • Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
  • Provide leadership for Health and Safety by making every reasonable effort to ensure the health and safety of staff within the section.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies for staff and contractors.
  • Complete training and development provided to improve or increase individual competencies related to position responsibilities.
  • Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the values we live by.
  • Perform other job-related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications include:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Physical fitness to perform rigorous daily duties in a range of weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions and interact in a positive manner with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to maintain concentration and alertness in a variety of situations.
  • Knowledge of OHS and WHIMIS regulations.
  • Proficiency with a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Basic awareness of occupational hazards and controls applicable to the work.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently with minimal supervision.

Asset Qualifications include:
  • Related experience, training or education.
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and light equipment used in the specific work assignments of this class.
  • Prior experience in operating equipment as required of the position.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Driver’s Abstract – must obtain a satisfactory review of a Driver’s Abstract with at least one year of driving experience.
  • Driver’s License - Class 5 minimum required.
