Job description

The City of Penticton is looking to fill the full-time seasonal position of Seasonal Works Maintenance I (Laborer). The Public Works department keeps our community safe by providing clean, safe drinking water, a reliable sanitary sewer system, and storm-water drainage to help prevent flooding. This department manages the roads in our community, as well as the parks and cemetery, and collects your garbage and recycling. To help support these services, as well as those delivered by other departments, the Public Works department also manages the City's fleet of vehicles.

The Works Maintenance I (Laborer) position reports to either the Roads and Drainage Supervisor or Utilities Supervisor depending on Departmental requirements. The Works Maintenance I provides general maintenance, cleaning and general labor assistance as required to all Public Works crews.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Public Works duties including assisting all work crews, litter pickup and collection, administering the street crack and crevice weed control program, sidewalk inspection program, water service inspection program, uni-directional water main flushing program, etc.
  • Operates equipment including but not limited to: pickup truck, aerial bucket truck, mobile crane truck, portable generator, cut saw, jackhammer, chainsaw, weed-eater, backpack blower, tampers, plate compactor, compressor, and other various small hand tools.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of Secondary School or equivalent.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's Licence.
  • Knowledge and experience working in general construction or equipment operation.
  • Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work outside in the presence of all types of weather conditions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively plan and prioritize assigned tasks and duties.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to deal with people in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to work co-operatively or independently, problem solve and exercise sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
