Job Description

The Senior Advisor, Labour Relations is accountable for the day-to-day HR advisory support for unionized environments, responding to and resolving grievances as well as preparing and presenting cases for arbitration, discipline handling, providing support during collective agreement negotiations and providing training and guidance to leaders. This role is key to ensuring we have a strong Labour Relations presence in the business that aligns with our corporate strategic direction.

The position is responsible for working closely with other stakeholders to deliver objectives and offer HR advisory services, while also supporting the evolution of HR service delivery.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Support Labour Relations Activities:
  • Support company's Labour Relations strategy through the development and implementation of a framework with streamlined, repeatable and best-practice approaches toward planning, negotiating, implementing and administering collective bargaining agreements;
  • Design sustainable processes and templates to attend to grievances and Labour Relations matters in a unionized environment;
  • Provide strategic recommendations to leadership on labour best practices to facilitate our strategic vision;
  • Provide effective coaching and guidance to leaders for the resolution of identified problems with a key focus on maintaining a positive and inclusive employee experience;
  • Lead the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements from an HR perspective, acting as a liaison to Subject Matter Experts across HSU;
  • Consult with internal and external labour legal counsel regarding labour strategies, legislation or other applicable LR issues; develop and support maintenance of legal advice repository. Responsible for the research, administration and distribution of Labour Relations documents including but not limited to wage schedules, meeting minutes, summaries, presentations, Collective Agreements, and related documents involving unionized employees; and,
  • Act as the Designated Respondent in federally regulated locations and initiate investigation or mediations.
Business Support:
  • Provide an exceptional level of support to Senior HR Strategic Partners enabling the delivery of efficient and effective HR solutions to business clients;
  • Support the execution of HR services and programs with tools and information that meet the needs of our clients, create efficiency, deliver integrated people solutions, and foster collaboration across HSU;
  • Provide HR Advisory support to leaders and ensure key HR practices are aligned with employment standards and provide integrated solutions to the organization that mitigates risk; and,
  • Contribute to a team environment that values equity, inclusion & diversity.
Improve Processes and Procedures:
  • Key contributor in the continuous improvement of HR policies, initiatives, standards and guidelines in line with legislation and industry best practices; and,
  • Seek input to the annual calendar of programs layering on projects, policy review requirements and other key organizational initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a Labour Relations dedicated role supporting a unionized workforce;
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive Human Resources generalist experience is required;
  • Post-secondary education and CPHR designation are considered an asset;
  • In depth knowledge of employment standards and human rights legislation, labor relations and union experience are required;
  • Strong technical skills in Labour Relations Collective Agreement administration and interpretation, market research/analysis and experience with union negotiations;
  • Strong leadership, coaching, facilitation, conflict resolution and relationship management skill;
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to establish trust, sell ideas, influence others and build relationships with people at all levels of an organization;
  • Exceptional critical thinking and analytical skills;
  • Problem solver with the ability to diagnose and analyze root causes to issues and recommend sustainable solutions;
  • Proven track record as a project lead with strong time management and project management skills;
  • A team player who engages and cross collaborates across HSU;
  • Continuous improvement mindset and approach to work, identifying opportunities for improvement and engaging appropriate HSU stakeholders in the solution;
  • Flexible, adaptable, learns quickly demonstrates courage and self-awareness; and
  • Proficient in MS Office and SuccessFactors.
