About Us


The Economics and Statistics Division assesses the Provincial government's interaction with the economy: how current and projected economic conditions influence government revenues as well as the effects of government spending, policy and projects on the economy. The Division supplies the core demographic and economic forecasts for the government's budgets and long range planning. The Division delivers regular reports and analysis about economic and social conditions in Nova Scotia, including the DailyStats - a digest about Nova Scotia and its place in the world. At the Division, we maintain a set of data and models that appraise the impacts of major economic events, investments and policy changes for the provincial economy. We organize and curate economic and social data for a wide range of users throughout the province.

About Our Opportunity


As the Senior Economist, you will provide specialized professional economic analysis for the Department as well as internal and external clients. You will be responsible for ensuring the government and the public has an accurate and objective understanding of the current situation in the economy, demographics, as well as social conditions. You will be accountable for quantifying the interactions Nova Scotians have with the economy.

You will also provide the province's official economic and demographic forecasts for provincial budgets and fiscal planning. You will analyze the economic implications of major industrial changes, government investments, significant policy decisions and fiscal plans. Identifying and understanding the risks and uncertainties of economic projections and analysis is vital to your work. Developing, testing and documenting model methodologies is a critical part of the work of the Senior Economist. As the Senior Economist, you will also lead production and dissemination of current economic data about Nova Scotia and its major trading partners on a high frequency basis. You will need to uphold data confidentiality requirements and to provide feedback on statistical priorities and data validation to Statistics Canada.

As the Senior Economist, you will lead a team of economists in delivering on your assigned duties. The Senior Economist reports to the Director, Economics and Statistics.

About You


This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Master's Degree with a relevant concentration such as economics, statistics or mathematics plus five years related experience. Required knowledge includes: specialized econometric/forecast modelling, input-output economic impact modelling, interpretation of current economic/demographic statistics. Strong written communications and oral presentation skills are required. Your application should describe specifically how your education and experiences meet these requirements.

While not required, it is considered an asset if you have managerial experience/training as well as working knowledge of the Nova Scotia Statistics Act, Federal Statistics Act and Finance Act.

Working Conditions


Most of your time is spent in a comfortable office setting. The normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.

Pay Grade:EC 12 -

Salary Range:$3,561.95 - $4,452.43 Bi-Weekly
