Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey's Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Utilities Maintenance team consists of a combination of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and a variety of Industrial Trades fulfilling our Maintenance Technician, Apprentice, and Planning roles. The team is responsible for providing both preventative and corrective maintenance across the Voisey's Bay Mine Site including the Port Facilities, Material Handling and Conveyor Equipment, Major and Minor HVAC systems, Accommodations and Service Complex buildings, as well as Power Generation Facilities and Infrastructure.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey's Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Maintenance Engineerto join our Utilities Maintenance department in Voisey's Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey's Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on two week on, two week off rotation.

The Senior Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will provide Maintenance Engineering expertise in the Utilities Maintenance department encompassing the mechanical systems and components supporting power generation, electrical distribution, surface infrastructure for mine ventilation, raw water, fresh water and sewage treatment. The Senior Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will lead in improving the overall equipment performance and reducing costs through establishment and implementation of proactive and reactive plant maintenance improvement programs. Moreover, the Senior Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will lead the development of maintenance team skills in improvement related activities, continuously monitor and analyze equipment performance, and facilitate improvement projects based on this data. Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Analyze Equipment performance and investigate trends to assist with development of maintenance plans.
  • Evaluate new technologies for condition monitoring programs/initiatives and provide necessary input in the selection process (including vendors).
  • Establish performance monitoring standards to meet Uptime and Availability targets.
  • Develop and maintain Utilities Maintenance KPI reports that includes explanation of variances and trends.
  • Develop and issue Engineering Work Requests.
  • Evaluate Equipment Design improvements and coordinate them with Central Engineering.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Procurement, Maintenance, Project Engineering, and OEMs as required.
  • Provide input for Equipment Capital Expenditures – design for Maintainability and Reliability.
  • Support Shutdowns as required/needed.
  • Support stakeholders with Troubleshooting complex problems.
  • Apply value analysis (cost vs. benefit) in making maintenance decisions concerning repair, replacement, or redesign of equipment and systems.
  • Provide counsel to Operations and Maintenance groups to assist in continuous improvement in key areas of person hours, materials, methods, machinery, and legal compliance.
  • Routinely contribute to the planning of realistic production capacity based upon analysis of preventive/predictive maintenance time needs, repair histories, inspection reports, and reliability block analysis.
  • Update Equipment operation and maintenance plans to optimize its life-cycle strategies and improve plant performance and maintain a precision maintenance library for use in Predictive Maintenance updates.
  • Manage Risk Based Inspection Program for development of long-range plans.
  • Assist the Utilities Maintenance Superintendent with Budget activities.
  • Relief for Utilities Maintenance Superintendent if required.

About You

Education:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • A Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) is required.

Experience:

  • 8 years as a Professional Engineer working in a role of similar experience in a related field.
  • Experience working in an industrial environment such as mining, or construction is preferred.
  • Experience in rotating equipment, conveyors, dust collectors, pumps, fans, piping systems, mechanical equipment related to power generations, etc.

Skills:

  • Broad knowledge in the repair of fixed plant assets and mining repair facilities.
  • Knowledge of diesel power generation would be an asset.
  • Strong computer skills in SAP would be an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of MS office products (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Decision making ability.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
