In this role, you will help shape the future of content and broadcasting policy in Canada. Our Regulatory Affairs group is responsible for advocacy before the CRTC, the government, and the courts on matters affecting the regulatory frameworks that govern the distribution of content, both on traditional broadcasting platforms and over the Internet. Copyright laws are a key pillar of those regulatory frameworks.

Reporting to the Director, Copyright and Broadcasting Policy, you are a highly capable advocate that will be responsible for leading TELUS' public policy and regulatory advocacy on copyright and broadcasting matters. You will collaborate with team members across Canada to provide timely regulatory advice to other TELUS team members on the application of copyright and broadcasting laws and regulations to the various services offered by TELUS.

What you will be doing:
  • Assist with the development and drafting of TELUS' public policy and regulatory advocacy on a wide range of content policy issues, including the regulation of online intermediaries and content platforms, and regulation of television distribution
  • Assist with ensuring regulatory compliance of Internet and content-related services provided by TELUS with copyright and broadcasting laws and regulations
  • Deliver timely analysis of relevant laws, regulations, and decisions and assessing proposed regulatory strategies
  • Meet with senior regulatory and government officials to discuss TELUS' positions on major public policy issues
  • Advise senior management and their business units on existing and new regulatory rules established by government bodies, and support compliance activities

Qualifications

What you bring
  • 3-6 years of experience practicing law with demonstrated knowledge and expertise in copyright law
  • Excellent written advocacy and oral communication skills, including presentation skills that enable effective communications with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of the legal and policy frameworks that affect content distribution, and of the delivery and business models in the broadcasting industry
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex files, to prioritize and deal with multiple assignments, and to exercise judgment, often under significant time pressures
Great-to-haves
  • Significant knowledge and experience in broadcasting regulation
  • Litigation experience is an asset, especially before the Copyright Board
  • Proficiency in French is an asset
