The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Fronting & Programs, this national role will be responsible to profitably grow a large portfolio through superior risk selection and strong relationships within the Programs space. This market-facing role will be required to build, and maintain, a strong relationship with Broking and Managing General Agent partners. The successful candidate will have appropriate P&C technical underwriting expertise to lead the review of existing programs (both delegated underwriting authority and offer & accept), coordinating a comprehensive review of profitability, performance, and risk appetite. Further, this role will be a key contributor to executing a governance framework across our portfolio of programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Champion and model our Liberty values and Guidelines for Inclusion to drive market leading culture and ensure positive employee engagement.
  • Lead the underwriting of an assigned portfolio of programs. This will include coordinating a comprehensive review of profitability, performance, and assessment of risk appetite while involving key stakeholders (actuarial, reinsurance, product, etc.) where necessary.
  • Actively manage the relationship and ongoing needs of the existing programs within our portfolios, building and maintaining relationships with MGAs/Brokers, while ensuring service levels are being met by all parties.
  • Efficiently triage and lead assigned new business opportunities while significantly contributing to new business strategy in accordance with Liberty's appetite and market trends.
  • Work closely with stakeholders across all functional areas to help identify loss trends or concerns and suggest changes to guidelines and strategies to ensure long-term profitability of the segment.
  • Review of MGA and Delegated Underwriting Authority contracts, working with Legal, to ensure adherence to Liberty standards.
  • Support the enhancement of the governance framework for Programs, and regulatory monitor and report on the portfolio analysis, identified risks on individual programs and in aggregate, key trends, indicators, and the financial performance & forecast.
  • Support the enhance of audit protocols, implement, and maintain said protocol of portfolio on programs portfolio where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate effective prioritization of workload and provide market-leading customer service for our internal stakeholders, brokers, and clients.
  • Challenge the status quo, experiment with new ideas, and help develop an industry leading approach to program business.
  • Perform related duties and special projects, as assigned, to assist in ensuring the success of Programs; the Alternative Risk Solutions & Programs team; and the broader Liberty Mutual Canada organization.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years underwriting experience (or equivalent) in the Property and Casualty insurance space, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Background and proven track record in growing and managing programs or other industry segment preferred.
  • A clear understanding of the growth opportunities in the market to help inform our growth strategy is considered an asset.
  • Experience reviewing business from a portfolio perspective, factoring in actuarial analysis and future projections, a preference.
  • Experience auditing, monitoring, and reporting on a book of business to management, addressing financial and governance metrics, a preference.
  • Ability to collaborate and exercise influence while working cross-functionally and building relationships.
  • Post-secondary education including relevant Insurance designation(s)/education is considered an asset.
  • Helps drive innovation through a growth mindset, viewing roadblocks as opportunities for growth and supporting new idea testing, training, and ongoing monitoring of changes.
  • Ability to multi-task and execute on various requirements, projects, and deadlines.
  • Superior time management and delegation skills.
