As a Sergeant, you will be responsible for supervising, coaching, and mentoring Community Peace Officers (CPOs). Primary duties include:

  • Supervise a team of Officers and provide direction and support as it pertains to their duties.
  • Work with the Officers in the field and in high risk or escalated investigations to help in the successful conclusion of incidents.
  • Coordinate and address citizen complaints and council concerns.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of management as required, for the purposes of providing expertise related to the provisions contained within bylaws enforced by Calgary Community Standards.
  • Liaise with the Law department to ensure that prosecution files are prepared correctly, and that Officers are informed of new legal requirements or case law.
  • Provide operational coverage to support CPOs, including acting in the role of Community Peace Officer.
  • Monitor prosecution matters in order to provide coaching to Officers where necessary.
 
Qualifications 
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (eg. GED), completion of 1 year of coursework in Justice Studies, Conflict Management, and/or Investigation Skills, and at least 8 years of law enforcement experience OR
  • A completed 2 year diploma in Law Enforcement, Criminology, Natural and Social Science, Education, Communication, Political Science or a related discipline and at least 4 years of related enforcement experience.
  • Hold the appointments of Bylaw Enforcement Officer and Community Peace Officer.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • An intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Outlook).
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, excellent communication and time management skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
 
Working Conditions: This position is psychologically and physically demanding and requires regular periods in the field including direct contact with domestic animals and the use of protective equipment.
 
 
Pre-employment Requirements 
  • An enhanced security clearance will be conducted. 
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
  • Applicants must meet the provincial standard on the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (P.A.R.E), Correctional Officer Physical Aptitude Test (COPAT), Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) or Alberta Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (APREP) physical fitness test prior to consideration.
 
Pre-employment Drug Test:An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
