Settlement Worker in School (SWIS)
35 hours per week until March 31, 2025

(Summers off)

Position Summary:

To assist and support immigrant parents and children with settlement needs in collaboration with school-based teams.
As part of the Immigrant Services team, help immigrants understand, navigate and access the social and economic systems so that they are able to successfully settle and integrate into the community. To coordinate a pool of both immigrant and nonimmigrant volunteers to support program delivery. Requires use of own vehicle to make home visits and to travel to various school locations. On occasion, work takes place outside of normal office hours.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Diploma in human/social services field or related field.
  • Minimum one (1) year recent related experience dealing with settlement needs and issues of new immigrants and refugees.

Job Skills and Ability:

  • Demonstrated ability working with people from diverse backgrounds and knowledge of cross cultural and adaptation issues.
  • Knowledge of immigrant settlement processes and referral practices.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and intercultural communication techniques.
  • Must be people oriented, outgoing, dynamic and resourceful.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational and implementation skills.
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills.
  • Strong computer and internet skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant community resources, service providers and networks.
  • Manage a caseload of immigrant clients.
  • Experience dealing with students and educators in a K-12 setting in BC.
  • Current knowledge of legislation and policies affecting refugees and immigrants.
  • Training in Volunteer Management.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Plan, develop and implement services that align with program requirements in consultation with the Settlement
Service Coordinator.

2. Maintain client service and up to date records and client files in accordance with funder and agency policy.
3. To conduct settlement needs assessment and complete an action plan with newcomer families.
4. To provide school enrolment support and facilitate ongoing communication between school staff and newcomer families.
5. To liaise between parents, students, schools and community agencies.
6. To provide guidance and support to newcomer families experiencing difficulties with settlement and integration and assist in problem solving and identifying appropriate services and resources.

7. Recruits, selects, dismisses, orients, trains, monitors and provides support to program volunteers.
8. To provide information and make referrals to community and government services and resources. To provide accompaniment as appropriate.
9. To develop, organize and/or facilitate settlement related events and workshops for schools.
10. To maintain current information on resources of interest to newcomer families.
11. To maintain a daily statistical record of contact with clients and services provided.
12. Maintain client information in various data bases including those of the funder and the Agency.
13. To prepare and submit monthly program activity report to the Settlement Services Coordinator.
14. To collaborate and consult with the Immigrant Services team as well as school-based teams.
15. Promotes public awareness of and support for the program by performing duties such as producing promotional materials and attending community events.
16. To attend meetings and workshops as directed.
17. Liaises with community service providers and other professionals to coordinate service provision, facilitate referrals to the program and represent the organization or program in external events.
18. To promote settlement services and outreach to community service providers.
19. Makes recommendation to the coordinator regarding program development, policy and procedure formulation and program evaluation.

20. Complete all mandatory learning requirements.

21. Performs other relevant duties as may be required.

General:

▪ Wage rate as per BCGEU Collective Agreement, Integrated Settlement & Integration Worker and Program
Coordinator 1 – Grid 12 - $28.32 per hour plus health and dental benefits.

▪ This position requires Union membership.

▪ This position is open to all persons.

▪ This position requires successful completion of a criminal record check.

▪ This position reports to the Settlement Services Coordinator.
