JOB SUMMARY
Fabricates and repairs Sheet Metal products or parts to precise contours and dimensions on a production or custom basis as required.
WORK PERFORMED
Plans and develops lay-outs as indicated from blueprints/work orders and templates, applying knowledge of trigonometry, product design, effects of heat and bend allowances for curvature and thickness of metals.
Utilizes Sheet Metal working equipment to cut, bend, punch, drill and straighten Sheet Metal parts. Uses computerized numerical controlled brake and punch presses, shears, rollers and spot welders etc.
Selects materials according to specifications and availability.
Assembles Sheet Metal parts, fastens otherwise fits parts onto Company products/units for fabrication.
Repairs defects in Sheet Metal parts.
Required to perform heavy physical work while avoiding potential safety hazards.
Applies welding techniques where required for the completion of work projects.
Maintains the workplace in a neat and safe condition.
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Must have a thorough knowledge of precision metal fabrication principles, be able to follow technical instructions and be able to operate computerized numerical controlled
(CNC) equipment.
Must have the ability to make mathematical calculations of quantity, size and shape of articles to be made.
Must be able to work in awkward positions requiring stooping, kneeling and crouching etc. when laying out markings and metal and in assembling Sheet Metal products.
Must be able to operate overhead cranes with sling and lifting attachments.
Must be knowledgeable of and comply with safety precautions and generally work in such a manner as to ensure own safety and health and that of others who may be affected by the incumbent's work.
RECOMMENDATIONS AND DECISIONS
Makes routing decisions in the application of Sheet Metal working skills. Recommends improvements in work methods, procedures and practices.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORS
Possible delays in production processes, increased waste materials and possible safety hazard to self and others.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND OTHER DISTINGUISHING ASPECTS
Normal production Sheet Metal conditions and exposure to loud noise from metal working machines.
Required to perform heavy physical work while avoiding potential safety hazards.
Must be able to perform medium to heavy work, lifting and positioning materials, parts and tools weighing up to 25 kg.
Many potential hazards requiring diligence and care in the normal performance of work duties.
May perform evening work on a rotating basis.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Normally, Community College diploma in Precision Metal Fabrication or the equivalent and 3-4 years experience in precision Sheet Metal work.
