Reporting to the Supervisor, Sign Manufacturing, this position is responsible for the manufacture of traffic, information and custom signs including the preparation of metal, layout, cutting and application of adhesive materials, and screen printing when applicable. Primary duties include:

  • Manufacture standard signs using pre-designed and established layouts provided in the Code Book, and methods using materials such as aluminum, plastic and wood and specialized sign making tools and equipment such as hand tools, metal sheets and punches.
  • Metal preparation (cutting, treating, templates, jig set-ups).
  • Perform vinyl cutting and weeding, computer generation of screen positives.
  • Install vinyl products to multiple substrates.
  • Create sign layouts and composition.
  • Screen print (hand, arm assisted, power arm presses, and automatic presses).
  • Manual shop work related to sign manufacturing (sign blanks, storing, racking, filing, cleaning).
  • Operation of power tools (shear, punches, brake, die cutter, slitter).
  • Perform record keeping, both manual and computer systems.
  • Provide work area maintenance.
  • Perform other duties such as minor maintenance in sign making tools and equipment, contact customers for clarification.
  • Perform basic sign layout, such as street name and time/ dates changes, simple text or one or two colors.

 
 
Qualifications 
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED)
  • At least 1 year of experience in a sign manufacturing role, with emphasis on screen printing and/or computerized vinyl cutting sign software.
  • Experience with hand and power tools, metal working machinery and large format printers will be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in vector-based sign making software, preferably Gerber Omega and Adobe Illustrator will also be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in Raster Image Processor (RIP) software, preferably Onyx or VersaWorks would be considered an asset.
  • The successful applicant must be able to work within a team environment and complete detailed projects with instructions. Attention to detail, sound judgment and safety awareness are essential. In addition, the applicant must be able to learn and apply new job skills accurately.
Working Conditions: Sign manufacturing is detailed and precise work requiring a high degree of manual dexterity and the ability to operate a variety of power tools.
 
Pre-employment Requirements 
  • Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills. 
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit. 
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
 
Pre-employment Drug Test:An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
