In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority ( Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Site Safety Coordinator reports to the Site Clinical Operations under a designated manager with matrix reporting and advisement from Health, Wellness and Safety (HW&S) or designate. The Coordinator participates in the development and implementation of violence and MSIP prevention initiatives at designated Island Health sites. The Coordinator is responsible to ensure Island Health meets organizational objectives in addition to maintaining compliance with HW&S standards and regulations. The position assists in the implementation of core and risk specific curricula for workplace violence and MSIP prevention education that meets the needs of all employees within Island Health, and that allows the organization to honour agreements reached between healthcare employers and unions to enhance violence and MSIP prevention initiatives.

The Coordinator enhances partnerships with key stakeholders at a variety of levels. The position provides ongoing assistance to multidisciplinary health care teams across Island Health and represents stakeholders on committees and working groups as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

Two year diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline plus two (2) years of recent, related health and safety experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current health and safety legislation, regulations and statutes.
  • Respectable mediation, communication and facilitation skills and the ability to problem solve complex issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present clear and decisive information, using the principles of adult education.
  • Ability to independently facilitate in classroom or virtual education.
  • Ability to provide leadership, guidance and direction to others including team members, leaders and staff.
  • Ability to mentor and coach employees on working safely.
  • Ability to effectively organize, prioritize and delegate work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of critical incident interventions, risk assessment and incident investigation processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including various computer software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
