TITLE: Social Work Instructor (Sessional)

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The ideal candidate will be capable of teaching one or more of the following SOWK course(s):

  • SOWK 201 – Social Welfare in Canada: This course introduces the historical, ideological, and theoretical foundations of social welfare in Canada in relation to the institutional structures of social welfare in the modern state. It explores the needs for social protection, the desires for recognition by diverse groups, and the impacts of social restructuring and globalization on exclusion and structural inequalities. Students will examine how specific social policies, programs, and concerns affect various populations in Canadian society, including youth, women, the elderly, and Indigenous peoples.
  • SOWK 202- Introduction to Social Work Practice: This course examines Social Work from historical, philosophical, and theoretical perspectives. The knowledge, skills, and values of Social Workers are discussed in the context of relevant codes of ethics and practice standards. Students will explore the diverse roles of Social Workers in relation to the basic structures and functions of social service agencies. The development of self-awareness is a key component of this course. Students will be invited to consider how their own values, attitudes, and beliefs align with the field of Social Work.

Our ideal candidate will have a passion for instructing, assisting students’ acquisition of learning outcomes, and applying active learning strategies within the classroom.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Social Work, or equivalent
  • Registered Social Worker experience a strong asset
  • 2 years experience teaching the same or similar courses at another BC post-secondary institution
  • Able to demonstrate success in innovative or student-centered teaching techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of course learning outcomes is an asset
  • Proficient with educational technology including databases and online learning environments
  • Excellent instructional capability
  • Able to maintain professionalism and cordiality when working with others
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office programs and applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, etc.)
  • Strong Proficiency in English
