Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Soil Laboratory Supervisor to join our team of professionals in Mississauga, ON

AECOM Geotechnical Material Laboratory provides low to complexity testing to support our internal and external projects and provide quality assurance testing of soil and aggregates for construction projects.

This position is a full-time role and is expected to begin in February 2023 to oversee AECOM laboratory located in Etobicoke, ON and manage operation and perform technical review. Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Supervise day to day lab operation and verify testing requests and prepare work forecast.
  • Carry out laboratory tests, as required, including concrete and aggregate and advanced soils testing procedures.
  • Perform advanced soils testing (i.e., consolidation, UCS rock testing, triaxial and direct shear).
  • Ensure testing quality and train junior staff.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained in accordance with specifications and perform calibrations and routine repairs of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Maintain an organized laboratory environment including soil inventory and equipment.
  • An understanding of ASTM and CSA Standards.
  • Participate in the CCIL and MTO Proficiency Testing.
  • Prepare laboratory testing reports.
  • Supervise and lead QA/QC Construction testing and inspection including field staff orientation and prepare technical reports.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with client contacts, suppliers, subcontractors, engineering consultants and other external agencies.
  • Prepare proposals for medium to high complexity projects for various geotechnical scope of work.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (geotechnical, geological, or civil engineering etc.)
  • 4+ years of civil and/or geotechnical experience.
  • Experience with laboratory soil testing procedures ranges from low to high complexity and familiar with MTO and CCIL requirements.
  • CCIL Certification for soils, aggregate and concrete.
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration with PEO as a P.Eng.
  • Class G driver's license.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
  • Post graduate degree in engineering.
  • 6+ years of civil and/or geotechnical experience.
  • Knowledge in rock mechanics engineering and project experience.
  • MTO medium to high complexity project experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • Willingness to work flexible hours under a variety of conditions.
  • A strong commitment to safety.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Previous experience working in an engineering consulting environment.
  • Have strong organizational ability, manage multiple projects and deliver on time and on budget.
  • Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing).
