This is a wonderful opportunity for gaining experience and knowledge of City of Calgary business practices. As a Special Events Crew Chief, you will be directly responsible for the set up/strikes and daily shift management of the many Special Events that The City of Calgary is involved in, including the City of Calgary’s Canada Day, the City of Calgary’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks, and many more. Primary duties include:

  • Assist with the administration, planning, implementation, and evaluation of Special Events and festivals in relation to event equipment.
  • Provide on-site direction for up to 8 special event crew members.
  • Complete event administrative tasks, such as reports and evaluations, inventory, and purchase suggestions.
  • Lead on-site safety activities including having daily safety briefings and ensuring well-being of clients, event patrons, and City of Calgary staff.
  • Perform regular reviews of event schedules, logistics, and implementation details and advise and discuss identified issues with the Production Specialists.
  • Conduct crew training (equipment focus) at the beginning of the season in consultation with the Production Coordinator.
  • Assist with equipment set-up and takedown as needed, which may include driving trucks, running industrial power tools, and working independently with other contractors.
 
Qualifications 
  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • At least 2 years of related experience with Special Events, concerts, or theatre production including supervisory experience.
  • Current Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) level "C", and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications. 
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalency).
  • Access to a personal vehicle for business use and/or the ability to obtain a City of Calgaryoperator's permit
  • Knowledge of inventory tracking and the ability to enter and look up information in an inventory database is considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires: 
    • Knowledge of technical and safety procedures, safety standards and codes for Special Events, sound safety judgement, and adherence to safety standards.
    • Knowledge and skills in event planning and organization with proven leadership ability.
    • Strong planning, organization, and leadership skills. 
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and work effectively with others.
    • The ability to assess customer needs and solve problems by evaluating and adapting.

Working Conditions:These positions work mainly outdoors in all types of weather conditions and require repetitive heavy lifting (up to a maximum of 50 lbs). Lifting includes heavy objects like tent frames, stage decks, or fence panels.
