The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for a Statement Gathering Coordinator. This position will coordinate Statement Gathering activities including in-person visits to communities and virtual gathering. The Statement Gathering Coordinator will also be working with external contractors for booking facilities or suppliers, and ensuring planning of events align with forecasted budget.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).

  • Completion of formal training program from a recognized institution required.
  • A post-secondary diploma or degree with a strong focus on Indigenous subjects and content or another related discipline (history, law, social work, political science, criminology) is preferred.
  • Four years of direct experience working in a complex environment (coordinating projects, event planning, and/or community engagement) is required.
  • Experience working with Indigenous peoples, Elders, Survivors, organizations, and communities is required.
  • Accounting experience or experience with budget forecasting, managing and reconciling is required.
  • Directly related administrative experience is required.
  • Experience with Statement Gathering or related experience in collecting oral history or stories from communities is required.
  • Experience working with community-based organizations who are involved in education, public programming and outreach is an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous communities, governments and organizations is required.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to Indigenous cultures and cultural practices is required.
  • Must have the ability to supervise and train support staff and contractors.
  • Must have good English oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have good organizational skills and be detail oriented.
  • Must have the capacity to work in both a team and individual based environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) is required.
  • Must be able to adapt to a cross-cultural setting.
  • Must be conscientious, professional, responsible and reliable.
  • Must exhibit comfort, ease, and excellent judgment working at a senior level with internal and external communities.
  • Must have a positive, pleasant and courteous manner.
  • The ability to work with Residential School Survivors and their families is required.
  • The ability to apply a trauma-informed approach with previous experience/training is required.
  • The ability to engage in tactful and diplomatic behaviour is required.
  • Ability to learn in-house University software systems (Concur and EPIC) is required.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and circumstances.
  • May be required to work over-time as needed, and some travel is required
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
  • Ability to speak French and/or an Indigenous language is an asset.
  • Knowledge of University policies/procedures are an asset.
  • A Class 5 driver’s license is required.
