Position: Stewardship & Communications Coordinator

Base of Operations: Medicine Hat, Alberta

Reports To: Executive Director

Who We Are: The South East Alberta Watershed Alliance (SEAWA) is one of the eleven Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils (WPACs) in Alberta. SEAWA is a multi-stakeholder, volunteer-based, not-for-profit society, designated as a WPAC by the Government of Alberta in 2010.

The Government of Alberta, partners with WPACs to help achieve the three goals of the provincial policy, Water for LifeAlberta’s Strategy for Sustainability. The goals are:

  • healthy aquatic ecosystems,
  • reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy
  • and safe, secure drinking water.

Job Description: SEAWA is seeking a qualified professional to work under the direction of the Executive Director, and in collaboration with SEAWA’s staff, contractors and volunteers to support SEAWA’s projects, applied research, and communication, education and outreach activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the Executive Director perform the following tasks:

  • Provide field team leadership and direction for field projects and applied research.
  • Work with the Executive Director and prepare weekly work plans for field projects and applied research. You work with summer students, volunteers, and contractors and implement work plans.
  • Perform field work tasks for the maintenance of riparian restoration educational sites and applied research experiments, and ensure supplies and equipment are organized in storage and ready for use.
  • Lead in the implementation and data collection of applied research projects, and citizen science data collection as they arise.
  • Prepare basic maps of location of project sites, experimental plots, sampling points, transects, and other spatial features.
  • Ensure field safety practices and respectful behaviour are followed as provided in SEAWA Health and Safety Manual, and Respectful Workplace Policy
  • Ensure that documentation of all field work, applied research, and educational activities are entered into SEAWA’s filing system (photos, data, expenses, GPS locations, maps, written articles, etc.)
  • Organize the holding of SEAWA events: educational forums, open houses, and tours
  • Organize and set-up SEAWA’s participation at community events
  • Write and post content / communications on the SEAWA website. Work with the web developer to correct website issues.
  • Write articles about SEAWA activities or any relevant topics for the SEAWA newsletter.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and experts on the SEAWA board and committees, educational institutions, and individuals, prepare SEAWA educational materials such as informational / factsheets, posters, booklets, articles, and social media postings
  • Assist in the holding of committee meetings and taking notes
  • Work with the Executive Director to identify new projects and develop partnerships
  • Support with grant proposal and report writing, conducting research as needed regarding grant availability required materials
  • Administrative and office tasks, and other ad hoc task assigned by the Executive Director to support the organization

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in any natural science field of study – environmental science, ecosystem management, biology, agriculture. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • At least three years of relevant work experience.
  • Ability to do manual field work and some lifting work.
  • Basic understanding of plant growth requirements in a semi-arid climate such as Southeastern Alberta.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Suite – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and a publication software.
  • Basic GIS skills.
  • Ability to learn website editing and posting.
  • Excellent English communication skills – spoken and written.
  • Collaborative and cooperative attitude, respectful, positive and cheerful disposition, and interested in listening to people, having discussion and sharing of relevant knowledge.
  • A strong work ethic: punctual, respectful, follows schedules, follows instructions (work plans and safety practices), meets deadlines and deliverables, and well-organized.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle to travel to work sites.
  • Able to work alone and as part of a team, and
  • Ability to work in a small urban centre such as Medicine Hat.

Position Details:

  • SEAWA offers a competitive salary (ranging from $55,000 to $58,000) that is dependant on relevant skills and experience, and benefits package.
  • Work hours are 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week
  • During the field season, work is 90% field work and 10% office work. Work for the fall-winter is approximately 10% field work and 90% office work
  • The position is at Medicine Hat, AB. There is no virtual work.
  • A Police Check and a valid AB driver's license are required, and
  • Position requires an individual who is legally allowed to work in Canada.
