Job Summary

The Regional Operations Branch aims to improve environmental performance through the development and co-ordination of provincial action towards: the reduction and removal of contaminating toxins and waste; the development and implementation of appropriate science-based standards; the issuing of authorization requirements to control and monitor industrial and community developments; and by working with partners and Indigenous Nations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. The program must balance the maintenance of environmental quality with sustainable economic and community development.
Reporting to a bargaining unit supervisor, the Environmental Authorizations Technologist protects the environment by providing evaluation and advice to others on the implementation and administration of the Environmental Management Act to manage authorization applications, industrial, municipal, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials. This role leads or assists in the processing of various waste authorizations within the region, conducts source monitoring to study impacts of toxins and wastes, calculates permit fees and facilitates compliance, continuous improvement and effective management of waste discharges into the environment.
Job Requirements:
  • Post-secondary diploma or higher in Environmental Management, Applied Science,Natural Sciences or a related field.
    An equivalent combination of relevant education and recent experience may also be considered
  • At least two (2) years of recent (within the past 5 years) experience in environmental protection and waste management, reduction, recycling, treatment and disposal technologies.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in environmental management and working with related acts and regulations.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Experience performing technical duties and working with key statutes that support environmental management.
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations, and policy.
  • Experience in natural resource management.
  • Experience in permitting and/or authorizations.
  • Experience working in a high-volume, regulatory environment, under the pressure of tight timelines.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position can be based out of any of the locations listed above.
