Job Summary
Bring your leadership skills and expertise in First Nation Relations to this rewarding role.
The primary duties of the First Nations Relations Advisor are centered on conducting consultations for the use of natural resources on Crown land and determining the impact on First Nations' identified or potential traditional use areas.
The First Nations Relations Advisor conducts First Nations consultation for individual and coordinated statutory authorizations supporting natural resource development in the Northeast region. The position conducts consultation according to government policy and negotiated agreements to ensure it occurs in a legally defensible manner. This work includes facilitating meetings and correspondence, building relationships with regional First Nations, advising ministry staff and industry on consultation requirements, and providing recommendations to statutory decision makers on how these authorizations should proceed with respect to First Nations' rights and interests.

Job Requirements:
- Degree in a field directly related to the job function (e.g. Indigenous Studies, Natural Resource or Environmental Management, Land Use Planning, Land Use Management, Resource Economics) and a minimum of 2 years related* experience, OR Technical Diploma in an area comparable to the above and a minimum of 2 years related* experience, OR
- 5 years of an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.
*Related experience includes a combination of the following:
- Experience working with and building collaborative relationships with First Nations or Indigenous communities, preferably in areas of natural resource or environmental management or land use stewardship.
- Experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships with stakeholders, preferably in areas of natural resource or environmental management or land use stewardship
- Experience leading or supporting consultation, engagement, negotiations, developing and/or supporting agreements, preferably with First Nations.
- Experience participating in consultation, negotiation, or facilitation of sessions with First Nations preferably related to land use or natural resource management issues.
- Experience addressing divergent perspectives, negotiating or facilitating solutions or compromises to complex issues and resolving or mitigating conflict.
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
- Knowledge of constitutional and statutory responsibilities associated with First Nations consultation.
- Experience working with First Nations communities and facilitating First Nations consultations.
- Experience working with and building collaborative relationships with First Nations or Indigenous communities, preferably in areas of natural resource or environmental management or land use stewardship.
- Experience with conducting technical reviews to support statutory decision making.
- Experience working with BC government statutes, regulations, and policies.

British Columbia's oldest interior community, Fort St. John is perfect for scenic drives, hiking, fishing, and camping, as it sits alongside the Peace River. Hiking is particularly nice in the surrounding provincial parks of Beatton Provincial Park and Charlie Lake Provincial park, where camping is also available. Its gentle rolling hills are perfect for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter months.
