The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is the Province of BC's primary emergency response organization. It operates year-round to deliver its mandate for wildfire management and response to natural hazard emergencies. The BCWS operates provincially, delivering services through six fire centres, thirty-three zones and two provincial centres in Kamloops and Victoria.
This position is responsible for implementing the cultural and prescribed fire program for the Northwest Fire Centre, which includes:
  • collaborating with First Nations to develop and implement a cultural burn program.
  • recommending and implementing strategies and provide advice and guidance to enable land managers, stakeholders and staff to achieve prescribed fire objectives.
  • managing and conducting planned fire ignitions using tactical knowledge around fire suppression principles and assessing fire behaviour and fire weather principles.
  • participating in local and provincial working groups that support BCWS' Cultural and Prescribed Fire program.

Job Requirements:
  • Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management, or equivalent knowledge, plus two (2) years pf related experience gained within the last five (5) years; OR
  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, or equivalent knowledge, plus four (4) years recent related experience; OR
  • Grade 12 plus six (6) years related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered; AND
  • Related experience is defined as experience gained in operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management, or equivalent
  • Experience in program or project management
  • Experience working on land and resource management issues

Preference Statements:
  • Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following Fireline Certifications:
    • Incident Commander 3
    • Ignition Trainee
    • Ignition Specialist
    • Prescribed Burn Boss 3
  • Preference may be given the candidates who are registered or eligible to immediately register with the Forest ProfessionalsBritish Columbia (FPBC) as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or an equivalent as identified by the BCFP
  • Preference may be given to candidates with supervisory experience

Provisos /Willingness statement(s)
  • Valid Class 5 driver licence
  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures
  • To keep current on emerging issues
  • To take in-house training and certification as required
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions
