What you're passionate about
The Strategic Business Analyst, Governance & Legal Services ("SBA") works within the larger Governance and Legal Services division within Alberta Pensions Services Corporation ("APS") to support the coordination of division planning and decision making. The SBA position works closely with the VP Governance & General Counsel ("VPGGC") to coordinate and support the development of division direction and business plans to achieve the APS Strategic Plan, to develop recommendations, and to create presentations and other materials for senior audiences (Executive Team, Senior Leadership Team, Corporate Board, etc.).
This position will operate as the "right hand" of the VPGGC and will functionally serve as the equivalent of the Chief of Staff for the VPGGC. Accordingly, this position also provides administrative support to the VPGGC as needed.
A typical day for the Strategic Business Analyst
  • In alignment with the APS Strategic Plan, manages the divisional business planning process and associated financial and resource planning.
  • In conjunction with the VPGGC, coordinates resources among the pooled staff members of the Governance and Legal Services division for the delivery of timely services to internal and external clients.
  • Acts as the lead during the twice-a-week Governance and Legal Services division stand up meetings to go through the Planner/ Kanban board of tasks that is used to visualize the work-in-progress of the division, and, in conjunction with the VPGGC, assign and re-assign team members as necessary to establish order for divisional work.
  • Works with the VPGGC to ensure staff members of the Governance and Legal Services division have the required tools, training and support mechanisms to optimize performance and increase their professional and technical knowledge base, associated core competencies and capabilities.
  • Schedules, manages, and coordinates staff activities to ensure projects and work assignments are completed within established budget and timeframes to achieve progress against plan.
  • Identifies and develops response plans and/ or procedures to address client service issues that are escalated to this level.
  • Coordinates strategic initiatives identified by the Governance and Legal Services division leadership team and conducts decision support analysis as required for key divisional decisions.
  • Conducts ongoing analysis of primary and secondary research of best practices to enhance and support business planning, performance measurement and reporting, as well as in emergent issues, risks and mitigations and trends relating to the Governance and Legal Services division.
  • Supports meetings to develop and implement performance measurement frameworks assessing the extent to which objectives and outcomes are achievable and where areas for improvement are needed.
  • Participates in and/ or may facilitate working groups to gather input for the development and execution of division priorities.
  • Develops reporting to drive business decisions and improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Proposes and implements improvements to policies, procedures and quality practices to meeting internal business goals and corporate objectives.
  • Acts as a liaison among the Governance and Legal Services leadership team, other APS divisions, and contractors to keep lines of communication open, to ensure meaningful collaboration, and to coordinate information flow among internal and external stakeholders, including sometimes confidential, time-sensitive information.
  • Creates divisional communication that drives divisional engagement and buy-in of business plans, including consideration of change management strategies.
  • Supports employee engagement activities (programs, projects and initiatives) and coordinates the implementation of divisional engagement processes and events.
  • Coordinates and manages VPGGC activities including, without limitation, calendar management, file management, responding to information and materials requests, records management, arranging travel and accommodations, responding to letters and electronic correspondence; and preparing routine memoranda and reports for the Executive Team Members according to the corporate style guide.

Qualifications
  • University degree, preferably in Business/Commerce or Arts
  • One or more years of experience in business planning, business process improvement or project management
  • General knowledge or experience with strategic planning and/or change management practices is an asset
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of APS corporate mandate, business, financial systems, procedures, policies and practices
  • Experience in work and business needs identification and resource and budget management
  • Thorough knowledge of Office 365 applications
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Suite (e.g. InDesign, Illustrator and/or Photoshop)
