As a Streetlight Design Technologist, you will be responsible for the planning, design, design review, tendering and inspection of streetlight systems in new subdivisions, capital major roads projects, and streetlight capital upgrading projects. Primary duties include:

  • Plan, design, review and implement Street Lighting systems including coordinating the tendering of projects and working with interested parties throughout planning to construction completion.

  • Use the streetlight Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and infrastructure management system to develop preventative maintenance and upgrading programs.

  • Prepare design drawings, cost estimates, tenders, purchase orders, and contracts.

  • Administer construction contracts and conduct field inspections are done to City specifications and standards.

  • Assist in various studies, projects, standards and specifications development as required.

  • Perform process improvement and records management duties.

  • Prepare material specifications, tendering, tender review/evaluation, shop drawings and review purchasing.

  • Coordinate quality assurance/control issues and review/update quality management system for materials.

  • Review subdivisions, development and engineering circulations and monitor service level agreement.

  • Assign workload and provide technical support to Works Inspectors, Technicians or students as required.

  • Respond to concerns from the public on matters such as lighting policies and safety concerns.

     
 
Qualifications 
  • A completed 2-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology and at least 5 years of experience in Street Light Design or a closely related field is required OR;

  • A Journeyman Powerline Technician Certificate OR a Journeyman Electrician Certificate combined with at least 5 years experience in Street Light construction.

  • Previous or other related experience working with an electrical utility preparing Street Light Designs and managing streetlight construction projects is required.

  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.

  • Access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.

  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and lighting design software AGI32 will be considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) will be considered an asset.

  • Familiarity with ROADS operating processes including, excavation permits, street use permits, concrete & asphalt repairs, E-Permits and the Temporary Traffic Control Manual will be considered an asset.

  • Experience performing voltage drop calculations will be considered an asset.

  • Experience with electrical trouble shooting operating photo electric relays and service cabinets to identify faulted underground conductors will be considered an asset.

  • Experience with Utility Alignment Permits using Calgary Rights of Way Management System (CROWM) will be considered an asset.

  • Experience interpreting structural drawings for vertical steel structures and concrete foundations (Cast in Place and Pre-cast) will be considered an asset.

  • A Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation is an asset.

  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to work well within a team environment, high attention to detail, good initiative and self-motivation.

work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
