What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description

As an Assistant Resource Management Technician, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:

  • Aid staff with information management of Crown land by distributing land use permits, work permits, leases, etc., and by conducting site visits.
  • Support the Aggregates program by inspecting aggregate operations and assisting with compliance monitoring.
  • Provide assistance to the Fish and Wildlife program by conducting research, including fieldwork, to assemble and draft information, including writing reports on fish and wildlife resources.
  • Provide assistance to the Forestry program by conducting field work involved with Silvicultural Effectiveness Monitoring and assisting with forest compliance inspections.
  • Provide administrative support, including organizing files and publications.
  • Provide support to local office programs and committees, including the Joint Health and Safety Committee and the Wellness Committee.
  • Assist with outreach activities, such as speaking with the public/delivering presentations, and providing information to the public to educate/generate awareness.
Note: You will be working outdoors and in diverse weather conditions, and may be required to operate boats, motors, ATVs, and other specialized equipment/tools.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):

  • Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
  • Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.
  • Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
  • Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • You apply your written communication skills to document findings, record data, and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, letters, fact sheets, etc.).
  • You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively in a team environment, and have a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently.


Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • You apply your experience using Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), database management (Access), presentations (PowerPoint); email and internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.


Analytical and Organizational Skills

  • You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review, and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means.
  • You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines.


Other Requirements

  • You are able to work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations
  • You are able to operate boats, motors, ATVs, and other specialized equipment/tools
  • You are able to travel with staff on multi-day outdoor field trips
  • For certain positions, you must have a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's Licence (or equivalent) with an excellent record
  • For certain positions, you must have, or be willing to acquire, a Pleasure Craft Operator Card and certification in Standard First Aid and CPR
