Conservation and Preservation

As a student Conservation Research and Data for the Collection, CMH Division and member of the Conservation team, (reporting to the Manager, Conservation and Preservation) you will:

Conduct research into artefact files of high priority in the Canadian Museum of History’s archival conservation treatment records;

Collate this data with Conservation and historical information found in other corporate records, and input this into the appropriate KeEmu database modules for future use by staff and stakeholders;

Assist Conservators with the set up and implementation of new data collection initiatives tied to imaging that will inform collections care practices, such as, but not limited to, Textile Strain Mapping and Reflectance Transformation Imaging.

What we are looking for:

Undergraduate student in a Humanities, Science or Arts degree program;

Recent and relevant experience in:

Conducting research into historic events or practices, using a variety of information sources;

Data and/or information collation, formatting, and use;

Cross referencing research information for accuracy and relevancy;

Writing research reports and/or academic papers and articles;

Working with multidisciplinary groups for research or projects (an asset);

Using and maintaining photographic equipment (an asset);

Digitization of archival material (an asset);

Using and handling archival photos and other fragile documents (an asset);

Working with cultural material or in a heritage environment (an asset).

Knowledge:

Research principles;

Occupational health and safety principles and practices;

Various computer application software including MS Office Suite, and Databases;

Conservation theory, practice, and ethics (an asset).

Eligibility criteria:

Must be a full-time student at College or University;

Must be returning to full-time studies next session (a proof will be required);

Bilingualism: BBB;

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Working conditions:

37.5 hours per week;

Ability to employ and work in personal protective equipment (PPE);

Hybrid-Flexible work possible: 4 days on site per week, 1 day remote, with flexibility for more as required.

Compensation: $21.24/hour to $23.62/hour – variation according to the student’s level of education

Duration: May 27, 2024 to August 16, 2024

Workplace: 100, Laurier Street, Gatineau, Quebec

Security Clearance: Enhanced Reliability
