Opportunity:
We are seeking a multi-talented Outdoor Educator to join our team Wild Camp team this Summer. Employment begins July 1st and runs until August 23rd, 2024.This includes the civic holiday on August 5th.There is mandatory paid staff training on Wednesday, June 26th and Thursday, June 27th from 9:00am - 4:00pm.Your regular work week will consist of working Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 4:30pm for a total of 40 hours. Some additional after hours program prep will be required Full time and part time opportunities are available.
The BMWS Outdoor Education Instructor is required to have a strong knowledge of the natural world, be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions and be adaptable to instruct to a wide range of students (From 4 to 12) in an outdoor setting.Valid driver’s license and access to your own vehicle is required in order to travel to our various program locations within the Blue Mountains region.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in scheduling activities for multiple groups while maintaining staffing ratios and operating procedures
- Manage instructors and LIT’s, ensuring that they are delivering fun, educational programs in a safe and supportive environment.This includes daily morning meetings and end of day debriefs as well as individual check ins with each instructor throughout the summer
- Assist in the creation of programming for instructors based on the daily/weekly thematic
- Be the face of the camp and bring a positive and personable attitude and demeanour to all communications with parents, instructors and campers to provide excellent customer service
- Continuous communication with the Camp Director and Executive Director
- Maintain client communication and rapport by greeting families in the parking lot at the start and end of each day, as well as communicate via phone, email or text where required
- Ensure the safety of all participants and staff by following BMWS policies and procedures
- When necessary, support the delivery of programming by stepping into a Camp Instructor role
- In collaboration with the Camp Director, assist in organizing and facilitating staff training for Camp Instructors and Leaders InTraining during the week of June 24th.
Qualifications:
- University Degree or Community College Diploma relating to Outdoor Education, Environmental Studies, Natural Science, and/or Recreation is desired (completed or in process of completing)
- Two (2) years of experience in camp, outdoor education or natural heritage interpretation. Experience in instructing or guiding students or campers of various grades and adults in an outdoor setting .
- Experience in backcountry guiding and tripping.
- Standard First Aid & CPR certification.

- Backcountr y / Adventure skills including: camping, canoeing, mountain biking, cross country skiing.
- Passionate about outdoor / experiential learning and outdoor education

- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Good initiative and ability to see what needs to be completed Team Player
- Wilderness First-aid is an asset
- Experience in backcountry guiding and tripping an asset
As a condition of employment, a valid Police Records Check (for working with the Vulnerable Sector) completed within the last 6 months is required prior to commencing work.
Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience and ranges from $135-$150 per day. Our intention is to exceed most other outdoor education programs - posting salary is for the day camp - 8 hours / day.
Potential full-time employment opportunities throughout the year upon successful completion of the summer.
