The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works supports the backbone of our provincial highway infrastructure. We are located at Miller Lake, at the Central Fleet Services hub of the province. The team at Miller Lake, is pivotal in ensuring the equipment used to maintain, repair, and build Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, and 4,100 bridges, is always safe and ready to go.


About Our Opportunity


As the Administrative student, you will gain practical administrative experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified public service professionals. This is the perfect opportunity to jump start your career and gain an understanding of the provincial government.

Primary Accountabilities


You will assist staff with administrative duties, which support the highway operations and contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Miller Lake Mechanical Branch by:


  • Performing reception duties, covering the Secretary for breaks and time-off (includes manning a dual line switchboard, coordinating mail, printing invoices and directing visitors to the facility locations and instructing them on safety guidelines and regulations);
  • Providing customer service to both the public and Miller Lake staff
  • Volume data entry (we anticipate approximately half of working hours will be data entry)
  • Organizing, filing, and preparing documents
  • Working in our warehouse to organize archived filing and isolate file boxes for destruction.

There may be opportunity for you to participate in and collaborate with various staff on special projects or assignments; helping you further enhance and develop your skills.

Qualifications and Experience


You must be currently enrolled as a student and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).


As the ideal candidate you:


  • are efficient with computers including Office software such as Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • are organized and able to prioritize your work; and
  • demonstrate excellent communication skills and work well in both independent and team based work environment
  • flexible and open to working on a variety of tasks as required
  • minimum typing speed of 40 WPM, a higher level of typing proficiency with a high degree of accuracy, would be considered an asset (60-70 WPM)

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day paid, working 8-4 with 2-15 minute breaks and ½ hour for lunch
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment, occasional work in the warehouse may be required
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

There is one (1) position available based out of Miller Lake.


This opportunity will start approximately May 1, 2024 with an end date of August 30, 2024.


Pay Grade:HOURLY

Salary Range:$17.34 - $28.26 Hourly
