Position Title: Student - Designs Mechanical (8-Month Term)

Team and Location: Parkland Refining (B.C.) LTD. – Burnaby, BC

In the lower mainland of British Columbia, Parkland owns and operates the Parkland Burnaby Refinery. The refinery is a 55,000 barrel per day crude oil refinery that creates finished petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The refinery is continually working to reduce its environmental impact with projects such as biofuels, emissions monitoring and reduction, and energy conservation.

Position Summary: 

As a member of the Designs Engineering team supporting the Refinery, the successful candidate will work alongside a unit (console) engineer to support small sized construction/reliability projects. This involves equipment such as piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, compressors, pumps, and valves. Work will include engineering support of repairs, replacements-in-kind, new installations, and working with the management of change process. The successful candidate will be encouraged to be resourceful, bring fresh perspective, and workshop solutions using all available resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support unit engineers’ small projects while interfacing with plant/field operations, process, engineering, maintenance, and inspection.
  • Support unit reliability and manage equipment improvements using management of change process and creating Engineering Work Orders.
  • Participate in troubleshooting unit/equipment problems with unit engineers, and delivering effective, safety-conscious solutions.
  • Learn to perform flange gasket bolting calculations, brittle fracture prevention evaluations, and piping stress analysis using industry codes and standards, as well as in-house and industry-leading software.
  • Assist in Fitness For Service (FFS) evaluations on piping and pressure vessels based on API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 industry code using hand calculations and commercial engineering software.
  • Assist in preparation for plant shutdowns including field inspection and data gathering.
  • Support engineering design of equipment, considering safety, operability, and environmental impact.
  • Source equipment including small pressure vessels, piping, fittings, hoses, flanges, gaskets, and bolting.
  • Participate in constructability analysis & process hazard analysis for small projects.
  • Participate in monthly team, safety, and unit reliability meetings. Facilitate small project meetings to provide progress updates and seek feedback.
  • Interface with external contractors and vendors to obtain equipment data, quotations, and proposals to support small projects.

Qualifications:

  • You are available for an 8-month work term beginning on or around May, 2024. 
  • You have completed your second year at a Canadian post-secondary institution working towards a bachelor’s degree with a focus on Applied Science in Mechanical or Integrated Engineering, or a related discipline. 
  • Completed courses in Introduction Mechanics of Materials, Materials for Mechanical Design, Introduction to Fluid Mechanics, Technical Communications. (Transcripts required).

    Preferred skills:

    • Possess clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills.
    • Ability to demonstrate an analytical approach to problem solving, with attention to detail.
    • Ability to build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, work well within a team environment but also be able to take on tasks independently and progress them effectively.
    • Experience working in safety-focused industrial facility is an asset, but not a requirement.
    • Experience or training in reading Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and piping Isometrics.
    • Well versed in Excel performing calculations, creating functional templates, and data lookups.
    • Received classroom training in 3D parametric solid modeling and drafting.  Experience in Solidworks is an asset.
    • Experience utilizing commercially available stress analysis software (finite element or beam element) is an asset, but not a requirement.
    • Recognize industry codes & standards used in the Oil & Gas industry including ASME, CSA, API.
    • Have a healthy appetite for learning and not be afraid to ask questions.
