Department: Public Works

Classification: Summer Student; Unionized

Salary Range: $17.35/hour as per Schedule “A”

Starting Date: April 29, 2024

Job Summary

Are you looking for a hands-on role that allows you to get outside? Want to work with a great team and take on new challenges? We’re hiring Summer Student Labourers to help deliver essential services to our community. This position helps to keep the City looking great by cutting grass on boulevards, picking up litter, replacing signs and helping various Public Works Crews.

Responsibilities

  • Operate machinery such as String trimmers, leaf blowers, push mowers, and riding mowers,
  • Collect and dispose of garbage and litter as directed, and assist with garbage and recycling collection,
  • Assist the Traffic Department with street sign replacement and traffic lane painting,
  • Assist the Road Maintenance and Restoration Crews with Traffic Control, asphalt, and pothole repair,
  • Assist with setup and takedown of special events and city functions,
  • Assist with Sanitary lateral repair and cleaning, catch basin cleaning and repair,
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the Supervisor of Works or designate.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Minimum Grade 12 and must be returning to a post-secondary school
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions and be physically able to perform duties
  • Must have Class G2 Ontario Driver’s License in good standing

Preferred:

  • Standard First Aid and CPR training
  • Experience operating a wide variety of handheld powered equipment
  • Training with MTO Book 7 for Temporary Conditions, and proven knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation.

All successful candidates must be able to attend mandatory orientation training on April 29, 2024.

Working Conditions

  • Scheduled 40-hour workweek, which includes weekends and alternate shift hours,
  • Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions,
  • May be required to work overtime.
