Summer Research Assistant – Kentville NS

To assist in this effort, we are seeking full-time Summer Research Assistants.

Summer Research Assistants will work as part of the Field Research Team (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dc4FkeeNcs) to support our Agriculture Extension Division. This position will help implement and complete various on-farm research projects that are designed to increase efficiency and demonstrate innovative practices on farm. Positions will be based at the Kentville Perennia Field Research Site and are contingent upon receipt of funding. The terms of these positions may vary slightly based on research projects and availability of candidates. However, the approximate term will start in early May and run for 4 months. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in agriculture.

This position is based in Kentville but will require regular travel within the Annapolis Valley (travel expenses reimbursed) and occasional travel around Nova Scotia. Early mornings, late afternoons and occasional weekend work is expected from time to time. Project work will require extended periods of time outdoors as well as data entry and research preparation as needed.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in the planting, spraying, maintaining, evaluating, and harvesting of agriculture research trials.
• Accurately collect, enter, and manage research data.
• Maintain, transport, and operate research equipment.
• Assist with tours at key demonstration sites.
• Perform literature searches and assist with development of technical information (e.g. factsheets, videos, etc.).

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an agriculture or related science degree
• Highly motivated with the ability to work independently
• Strong organization and time management skills
• Must have excellent attention to detail
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable working outside in the elements
• Capable of lifting up to 20 kg.
• Self-starter and willing to accept responsibility.
• Adaptable to various work environments
• A basic understanding of agronomic practices
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
• Access to a vehicle would be an asset

Education Level: Minimum completion of second year of undergraduate study

Duration: The 4-month position will run from May to August 2024

Work Week: 35 hours per week; some flexibility in working hours required.

Program(s) of Study: B. Sc. (Agriculture, Environmental Science, Biology)
